Whether the cause for concern is monetary or parents worrying about their children’s futures, it is certain that low grades and test scores are a major issue in today’s society. Budgets for schools are constantly being cut because of less than impressive test scores, especially in inner city school districts. This leads to a large learning gap and inequality between urban and suburban schools, making life difficult for those not given the same opportunity.

Many times the problems lie in the students that show indolence and a general apathy towards school. However, this could simply be solved by the re-education of these individuals and a reform of their study and learning skills. Re-education methods would consist of hypnotic suggestion, visual cues, solitary confinement, and slow torture for students who score less than a “B” grade on important tests or in non-advanced placement classes. This mandatory alternative learning program would take place over a three month period, with more time available for more severe cases.

An obvious advantage of re-education is higher grades and test scores for previously underachieving students. These higher test scores will lead to more government funding for improved school districts until they are equal to the current leading schools.

Another advantage is a raise in the quality of living for most individuals, as higher grades often correspond with making more money.

A third advantage to the re-education of underachievers is the reform of their behavior. Previously over emotional or trouble making students could be supplemented with extra re- education methods to calm them and make them more focused on school. Without as many disturbances in the classroom, the opportunity for students to learn and for teachers to teach raises dramatically.

Some human rights groups may argue against this method of reform by stating that it is cruel and unusual punishment. However, I believe that it is neither cruel or unusual as the methods used are ultimately in the best interests of the students involved. Parents also should not be concerned, as they are sure to be happier with a more well behaved and smarter child.

A second argument against the re-education of underachievers is the cost involved. This, however, will not be a major issue as human staff will be kept to a minimum. Technology today is much cheaper than in the past, allowing the possibility of a mostly automated staff. For instance, simple electronic timers and machines can execute daily tasks such as handling video to be viewed, cooking simple meals, poking, prodding, and slicing.

A final argument against this form of re-education is that it would upset the current social balance. Students that were put through the program may surpass those who currently succeed in school. Those who object may also continue to say that this may cause a shift in social classes and cause college admission competition to be more fierce than ever. This argument would most likely prove to be valid if the re-education were put into effect. However, the final outcome would be more positive than anything. In the world today, many more intelligent people are needed. A shift in social classes may also be positive as the middle class would grow while the upper and lower classes would start to diminish. As for college, it may be tougher to get in, but that gives the student all the more reason to work harder. In conclusion, the re-education of underachieving students with various methods would end up being very positive, as school funding would be distributed more equally, the standard of living would increase, and there would be more intelligent people in the world. Although some of the methods may seem unorthodox at first, they are guaranteed to be in the best interest of the students.
