As a high school student, I have had a special interested in science. Probably it was due to curiosity and at the same time, I was amazed about the physiology of the human body. At the start of my college years, I became even more passionate about science especially in human biology and organic chemistry. I started to volunteer in different health-care settings including both hospitals and loW-income clinics in order to gain experiences in the medical field.
With different exposures to medicines from my education to my volunteer works, I’ve realized that nursing is a career for me, not just because of my personal interest but also because of the fact thatI can make a difference in someone’s life. Nurse practitioner is my professional career goal in the future. A graduate-level of nursing education would allow me to continue obtaining higher knowledge and professional skills necessarily in becoming a successful nurse. I have an ambition to help the less fortunate individuals. Thus, I want to take advantage of my knowledge and my strength to provide high quality healthcare and promote good health within our community. The Oregon Health and Science University will provide me the opportunity to achieve my career goal. The university offer diverse possibilities in nursing career as well as opportunity to attain for higher education in nursing. With that in mind, OHSU also provide an accelerated bachelor degree in nursing for student like me, who have earned a non-nursing bachelor degree, to enter nursing education.
My plan in attending the School of Nursing at OHSU is to complete the accelerated B.S program in nursing and earn my license to practice as a registered nurse. I will then continue to work and obtain graduate-level of nursing in order to become a nurse practitioner. “The letting go and the goodbye which are not easy at all! Yet, they are always and forever part of our human journey..” I was told by Father John, a priest I’ve met during my three months volunteering abroad in Vietnam. His words, his actions and his believe have inspired me to follow my path in becoming a successful nurse. Father John is the founder of a non-profit organization for HIV positive children in Vietnam, called the House of Hope. Just like the name, the house is full of desire and hope yet, reside the most unfortunate and vulnerable population in our society, the children inflicted with HIV.I volunteered at House of Hope during three months of summer and what I saw was more than what I could expect.

Of all the 70-plus children, some were left orphaned after their parents surrendered to HIV; some were only a few months old grabbed in a plastic bag and left at doorstep of the shelter after they got neglect by their families. It was extremely an emotional experience to see the tiny little creature trapped with a most terrifying viral disease got thrown around like an unwanted object. Why does this innocent child have to endure a fate that a few of us can only imagine? As misguided fear and ignorance about HIV pervade into the Vietnamese society, HIV children suffer abandon from their families, discrimination from their community and insufficient healthcare from hospitals. It was a big challenge for Father John in his mission to integrate his children into the mainstream of the society. Since he has a background in medicine, he was mOstly in charge with the children’s health. I was trained to assist him with the medication supplies and the kids’ injuries. I offend helped bring the kids to watch movies, play games at arcade, and allow them to explore the outside world like any normal kids should have.
Two children have died during my stay at House of Hope. This is normal as it happens many times, but it was hard for me to accept the fact that these innocent children will not have many years left to live. Yet, every day when I walk into this house, I see the children full with energy and hope. I see them willingly to share their toys, their treats with one another. I see them smile with everybody around them even though they possess very little simple pleasures of life. Then I look back at how blessed I’ve been for all these years and for that moment I’ve realized I was blessed for a reason. I was blessed to have the strong mind, the energy and the strength to take care of the unfortunate. Working at House of Hope has gone beyond my expectations; the HIV children have touched my heart. They inspire me to follow my ambition in becoming a nurse and continue my mission to improve the physical and emotional health of our people. For me, a good nurse should first have energy and ambition for the job.
A successful nurse should be able to build strong work ethics and establish a good connection with the patients. They should feel confidence to apply medical knowledge in their healthcare services as well as be able to enjoy and work best in team environment with other nurses and physicians. The most important responsibility of a nurse should be her ability to provide high quality healthcare for everyone despite their social and racial status. Besides that note, a nurse is also responsible for raising awareness and provides valuable resources for disease preventions in order to improve the health of our community. I am not perfect. I have strengths and weaknesses, but I believe that the idea of imperfection would make me a good nurse if I can have a balance between the two. I consider my strengths to be dependent, confident, strong ambition, organized, detail oriented, and good time management.
Being a sister of an autistic boy in my family, how T’ve learned to interact with my 15 years old brother have taught me to be patient and calm despite the challenge situations. I am also a good listener and advisor. I consider bad moments in life happen for a reason and that is to bring a human being and another closer to each other. Beside the necessarily knowledge, a nurse requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as being flexible and reliable. I believe that I have the potential to achieve such expectations. One of my major weaknesses is being too sensitive and emotional. This personality can have a positive or a negative effect depending on my ability to manage it. A nurse should be empathy but at the same time maintain emotional stability on the job. I understand that nursing can be extremely stressful at time. It is so crucial to keep the personal emotions away from your job. It is crucial to keep myself grounded and be able to drawa line between what I can and cannot do.
The House of Hope was where I’ve first experienced the death of a child I spent half of my time took care of. Being the first time I did not handle it very well, I continued to blame myself as though her death was my entire fault. Only when I found a picture she drew, a picture of me and her smiling and playing in the park, that I finally realized if it wasn’t for the House of Hope, if it wasn’t for Father John, if it wasn’t for me, she would not be able to smile on that swing, she would not be able to live everyday to its best, and she would not have been so cheerful for only a few days of miracle. With just a touch, a simple smile, a simple hug can make such tremendous difference in another person’s life. Empathy, as I finally understood, the act of caring in which despite the worse consequences, would grant the patients a miracle they have always been hope for.
Empathy, it is the very first quality P’ve leaned along my path of becoming an enthusiastic nurse. We have them all in the life me and you live: receiving, giving thanks, broken, giving up, and keep hoping. working at House of Hope has inspired me to look beyond the scope of general healthcare services and dive into the lives of those who suffer from both psychological and physical burden. The HIV children have touched my soul and let me know that each of us is destined for greatest things in life. It is only the matter of seeking out those valuable aspects through experiences. I can guarantee that my addition in your nursing program will bring ambition, energy and enthusiasm into the career of nursing.
