When the internet was invented, there was not really much security at the time. The internet was brand new and it really wasn’t a common appliance in the household. People wouldn’t have guessed it was different from T.V.’s, with those one would watch cartoons or movies out of it, while the internet would allow humans to communicate to each other and it expands to something more. Though, as the internet was still considered new, the tragedy of 9/11 occurred. The governments were becoming paranoid due to the attacked and started to monitor citizens for suspicious behavior. As technology grows, people are willing to set new laws to protect themselves and their own people.
During the recent years, the government has been into securing citizen’s privacy. Citizens no longer have this privacy to keep the public safe from any suspicious activity. Due to the government surveilling citizens, future crimes have been stopped. Nowadays, lots of attacks are planned on social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, but if there is suspicion, the government will look further into this and then arrest the person who is trying to attack. The government enacts a warrant, like a house warrant, to be able to look through the person’s profile and dig deeper into their information.
Usually, people who commits crime and are okay with posting the crime online usually have more evidence deeper in their web. Not only that, but they probably have it on their phones and their laptops to. Some people think that erasing their history will get rid of evidence, but that’s not true, the NSA are able to retrieve back to what was “deleted.” For the person, they would do a background check on them, and see their activities to figure out what kind of person they are. Usually they have minor crimes to no crimes at all, but sometimes people have traces and years back of crimes that let the government know when to shut down their activity and act on it. Although, the government has done so much to stop crimes, that a few has slipped time to time.
Some crimes have avoidably been missed by the government before they can stop it. For instance, the Valentine’s day shooting from Nikolas Cruz occurred in Stoneman Douglas High School. The 19-year-old was claimed for being bullied, and even though he graduated from high school, came back with an AR-15 rifle and killed 17 people. Prior to his arrests and the toll of many deaths, he has posted pictures of his guns on Instagram. Despite the National Security Agency doing their best efforts to find suspicion online, this was missed. The pictures were of Cruz holding up rifles, knifes, and even pointed the gun at a building. The NSA can only do so much to protect citizens from tragedy like this, and they have.
The NSA has caught so many people from suspicious activity, that when they are arrested it was shown they were planning premeditate murder. Most people nowadays post their plots on social media, that without the government watching for suspicious activity, more deaths and tragedies would have occurred. People nowadays find it funny, despite it being disturbing, to share their plots, or even show pictures of people they have murdered. Everything is being shared on social media, and despite a few cases slipping, social media carries great evidence of crime, and can be used against in court. A few criminals have been caught and lives have been saved for the NSA catching on before they can go out and cause destruction.
People are either against the government looking through their privacy or are okay with it. Some would say that it they have nothing to hide, but others simply don’t like the fact that they are being monitored. After 9/11 occurred, the government wanted to make the public safe and by doing so they came up with the idea to watch the public’s post’s for suspicious activity. There was uprising of terrorists after 2001, and the government wanted to avoid another attack such like 9/11. The downfall of the internet no longer being as private is that sites don’t follow the regulation.
The NSA needs a warrant before being able to look through someone’s profile in depth. NSA employees didn’t follow that simple rule, and were looking through profiles without a warrant, but that is illegal. Even though it sounds like the government is watching their people 24/7, that is not the case, they are only allowed to do so if there’s evidence leading up to a person’s plot. So many tragedies have been avoided due to this, 9/11 has put so many into fear when it happened over 17 years ago. Technology is so different now ‘cause of it, and simply the government wants to put protection for its people. Although, the government monitors the internet for protection, we need more laws to keep our privacy, private.
There are already a lot of laws about the privacy of citizens, and how the NSA need a warrant before ransacking and going through someone’s personal information. Though, the NSA employees themselves are able to go through it despite a warrant, I think we need to make more better security of this for it not to occur. We all know that the internet is not private but going through someone’s pictures they have on their laptop, that isn’t shared to the media is quite unfair. NSA employee or not, they shouldn’t have the right to go through someone’s belongings for the fun of it, unless they have a warrant and know that the citizen is committing a crime against their people.
That also means we should have a law that allows us to be fully private without being able to get hacked. The only people who should have access is the NSA, and despite that, they shouldn’t be able to go through our stuff without a warrant and a good reasoning. Lots of people are being hacked and their information being shown to millions of people, especially when dating apps are being exposed and showing its users. There should be a better mechanism to keep the privacy of the people, and protect them from the embarrassment of it. Most people do have embarrassing things saved into their hardware, and it should be protected because they have the right to have their things private. Even though, it may seem hard these days, especially since 9/11 has caused the government to become so paranoid in another tragedy, but people need their privacy.
Overall, acts have been enacted for the safety and privacy of people. Some privacy isn’t secured and needs to be reevaluated, but the government has good intentions. They fear of another relapse of a tragedy and has started to surveillance people just to avoid another mass destruction, which has helped. Without privacy though, people aren’t able to express who they are and they don’t need to cling to the fact of being watched. The government should and only should be able to go through someone’s privacy if there is suspicion and still have to carry out a warrant to fully act on it. Throughout its flaws, it has proven to help by arresting those who were planning to plot a tragedy. And they have evidence from the social media platform they’ve used.
