In this article, Dwivedi argues that a profound environmental ethics, consisting in satyagraha permeates Hinduism. As Hinduism holds to a strong version of the equal sanctity of all life and for thousands of years practiced sustainable agriculture and nonviolence towards animals and nature. O.P. Dwivedi in this conversation argues that we should reawaken religious qualities if the world is going to make some efforts to reduce the dimension of environmental corruption. He also recommends that religious beliefs can play a vital role in helping moral society which would put protection and regards for God’s creation first, and consign independence, realism and our advanced desire to dominate nature in subordinate place.
Dwivedi further contends that religion makes people aware about their limits of our control. He also argues that in the last hundreds of years satyagraha lost much of its effectiveness, but there are signs that it is reasserting itself. According to him, he thinks that environmental education will remain incomplete until it includes cultural values and religious beliefs. He, therefore explains his content by using the example of Hindu religious beliefs to make understand how reawakening religious beliefs make a change in attitude towards nature. The fact to which I agree with Dwivedi is that religious values can serve to help the natural developments, but on the other hand i disagree with his view of explaining the power of religion.
Dwivedi fails to address the changing nature of religious traditions and problems of pollution. I felt that author point of view was debilitated by his inability to bargain with these issues. According to Dwivedi. The Hindu religion is one of the religious traditions who respect for the earth and keep protected it from pollution and other environment problems. He also argues that humans are intended to take care of environment. Despite the fact I agree with the author as it is one of the clarification of the Hindu writings, I would recommend that Hinduism can be exhibited as empowering human power over the earth.
To sum up, in reading I felt one of his biggest weakness was failing to address political and economic issues which prevented ecological preservation from succeeding in India. From which we can understand that author leaves the readers with unrealistic approach.
