Initially, Industrialization was thought of in an attempt to bring the nonindustrial sectors of an economy closer to the manufacturing sector of the economy. (“What Is Industrialization? Definition and Meaning.” BusinessDictionary.com) However, the effects were more diverse than imagined, Industrialization can be regarded as a very wide topic, simply due to the fact that Industrialization in different areas and eras had different effects other than economical ones, including social, political, military and educational effects. The social effects of Industrialization are a wide umbrella, therefore education, employment etc. come under it. Clearly, one would believe that an improvement in education, employment etc. would mean that Industrialization benefitted society but it is important to know both the good and the bad in order to reach a proper conclusion. My aim in this report is to explain whether industrialization benefited society or not.
In order to get to the bottom of this we must understand what Industrialization is and its origin. Industrialization is a sustained economic development based on factory production, division of labor, concentration of industries and population in certain geographical areas, and urbanization. (“What Is Industrialization? Definition and Meaning.” BusinessDictionary.com) The Industrial Revolution first began in Britain in the 18th century but soon spread throughout Europe and North America. Historians have identified several causes for the Industrial Revolution, including: the emergence of capitalism, European imperialism, efforts to mine coal, and the effects of the Agricultural Revolution. (“Causes of the Industrial Revolution.” History Crunch) This shows that the by-products (social, political and military effects) of industrialization were not in the interest of the nations at first, however the mindset of society had developed to understand the fact that those changes were important for a better standard of living.
There is no doubt that the effects of industrialization were greatly benefitting for society, they provided better education, better employment opportunities and moreover a better standard of living.
Population increase and better job opportunities were a major side effect of Industrialization, furthermore, according to The British Museum, “Industrialization resulted in an increase in population and the phenomenon of urbanization, as a growing number of people moved to urban centers in search of employment.”
I believe that The British Museum is a reliable source as it is in fact a “.org” website meaning it has great credibility as it is run by well established organization, however the information is limited to The British Industrial Revolution, meaning that the effects mentioned might not be universal due to different factors such as the reason for industrialization, availability of specific resources like accommodation etc.
