GarageBand is a line of digital audio workstations for macOS and iOS that allows users to create music or podcasts. GarageBand was developed by Apple Inc. under the direction of Dr. Gerhard Lengeling, and released on January 6, 2004. GarageBand enables users to create multiple tracks with pre-made MIDI keyboards, pre-made loops, an array of various instrumental effects, and voice recordings. GarageBand is able to record and playback multiple tracks of audio. It also has filters which allow the use of many effects, such as reverb, echo, and distortion. One benefit to using GarageBand is that it can support any music format, and it can export songs in many different formats. GarageBand includes sampled instruments and software modeled synthesizers. These synthesizers can be used to create original music or perform live music. GarageBand uses USB MIDI keyboard connected to the computer. GarageBand includes a standard keyboard instrument and ‘Smart Keyboard’ instrument. The keyboard features several keyboard sounds including grand piano, electric piano, organ, clavinet, synth leads, synth pads, and bass synths. GarageBand also has two types of drums, touch drums and “Smart Drums.” The touch drums instrument includes seven acoustic drum kits and three electronic drum kits.

On the “Smart Drums,” drum sounds are arrangeable. GarageBand also has a “Smart Guitar,” which includes an acoustic guitar, two electric guitars, and a distortion guitar. The ‘Smart Bass’ instrument has three electric basses, an acoustic orchestral bass, and four customizable synth basses. GarageBand can also import MIDI files to edit many different aspects of a recorded note, including pitch, velocity, and duration. GarageBand also allows the user to download pre-recorded music lessons for piano and guitar. These lessons consist of a music teacher presenting the lesson through a video. There are two types of lessons: basic lessons and artist lessons. The basic lessons are free to use and teach finger position for both guitar and piano. The artist lessons are more advanced, and some require the user to make a payment. In an artist lesson, the instructor is often the actual musician/songwriter who composed the song being taught in the lesson. The music examples used in these lessons features popular music. Many schools currently used GarageBand for music classes. GarageBand is fairly simple to use, and many of its features are free. GarageBand is used by both beginner musicians and by professional artists because of its wide variety of features.
