Article Review

Elsevier is an organization focused on advancing information on global issues surrounding science and health. This article was provided by Elsevier to inform and educate people on how being in quarantine, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, can psychologically and physical impact the population of older people, and how physical activity can lower the consequences of these two.

The original information is provided by research teams from different universities in Spain, and put together by authors D. Jiménez-Pavón, A. Carbonell-Baeza and C.J. Lavie.

The original research is supported by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation and Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. References are provided for this article.

Information in this article flows in a logical manner and the parts needing further elaboration are placed under sub-headings. Pictures are provided to convey a clear understanding of the information.

This article was extracted from a press (groups of articles that are peer-reviewed and accepted however, they have not been published) titled Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases. Which is extracted from the ScienceDirect Journals & Books online. Although this is a peer-reviewed article, simple terms are used and can be understood clearly by readers of different backgrounds and specialty.

Information Review

The controlling idea of this article is based on information gathered worldwide from the COVID-19 pandemic research, that older people have characteristics that puts them at higher risk of contracting the virus. And so provides an active solution by stating that physical activities, in the comfort of their homes during quarantine, can provide the elderly with “preventive/therapeutic benefits.”, as stated in the article. These include preventing negative psychological impacts, and the onset of chronic and lifestyle diseases which are implied to be some of the characteristics which makes the older population susceptible to COVID-19.

Physical activity for older people is crucial for a variety of health benefits and avoiding a variety of health problems (this is similarly emphasized in the “Knowledge, attitude and practice of physiotherapists towards promotion of physically active lifestyles in patient management.” article discussed in our first forum).

This article presents convincing facts of how physical activities and exercises can boost healthy aging processes, build and maintain a healthy physical body, and most importantly live a physically active lifestyle, especially for older people, not only for physical benefits but psychological benefits as well. Statistics and dates are provided. Information and links for further reading and research is also provided for the reader’s disposal.

Personal Input

I find this article informative, convincing and enlightening. It is very easy to follow and understand clearly. I think the authors have effectively constructed this article successfully and anyone reading this article will find it very easy to understand the whole concept of how important physical activity and exercises are, for older people, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although, there are no confirmed cases in PNG, I still strongly recommend that older Papua New Guineans should be highly active at home to create an active and healthy lifestyle for themselves.
