Introduction

(Attention Getter) Who here has been to New York City and seen the ground zero memorial? Did you know that there is a second memorial in New York for 9/11? (Reveal and Relate) On the 5″ anniversary of 9/11 Russia gifted us with the teardrop memorial which was officially named To the Struggle Against World Terrorism. And although we have all been affected by the events of 9/11 in one way or another most of us have never even heard of this tribute to the fallen.

(Establish Credibility) I irst went to see the memorial a couple years ago when I went back to New York to see my family. Some of my family was in New York City at the time of the attack so the event definitely impacted my life.

(Thesis) So today I wil be telling you guys all about the teardrop memorial.

(Preview) I am going to talk about

  • a. The Artust,
  • b. The architecture,
  • c. And the reason why its not common knowledge

Body

(The Artist) The creator of the memorial is Zurab Tsereteli who is from Russia and is very well known for his large sculptures.

a. The day of 9/11 in 2001 Zurab Tsereteli saw the tragedy on the news from Russian and felt that he had to help somehow so he decided to build a monument to honor those who were lost.

b. According to the New Yorker after he designed the structure and built it he had some trouble finding a place in the city that was appropriate for such a large somber monument but decided on Bayonne, New Jersey looking out onto the harbor across from the city.

i. The New York Times says that to bring the statue over from Russia it had to be brought over in eight separate pieces plus the teardrop and then assembled in the US.

(The Architecture) Secondly the teardrop memorial took almost five years to create and move to the correct site.

C. The structure is around 10 stories tall and is made out of bronze and the teardrop is made out of nickel according to fox news.

d. Bill Clinton stated while speaking at the unveiling ceremony that the Teardrop down the middle of the structure is called the tear of grief. It is meant to represent grief over all the people who lost their lives and also the hope for a future without terrorism.(Visual Aid) Here you can see in the picture that the tear drop is between the two pieces of bronze that look like the towers.

The base of the structure has the names of every person who lost their lives in the tower attacks etched into it. (Visual Aid)You can see in this picture where all the names are.

(Common Knowledge) Since we know about the artist and the architecture of this monument it’s hard to understand why it got so little public attention.

f. Fox News says one reason the monument is not well known is because of the location. It is out of the way in New Jersey in an unpopulated area otherwise they believe it would be really popular.

g. Although according to the monument website locals say the best view of the monument is coming into the harbor by boat.

Conclusion

(Signal the End) So before I finish up I just wanted to reiterate some cool facts.
a. The artist actually had trouble tiguring out where to put the monument once he built it.

b. The teardrop is a dual representation of grief from the past and hope for a peaceful future.

c. And finally that Bill Clinton actually spoke at the unveiling of the monument, (Artistic Last Line) That is all I have but I hope I showed you a cool part of history and that you enjoyed it.
