Abortion is the practice of killing the weakest and most defenseless among us. Unfortunately, it is very common in our society now. Since the Supreme Court handed down the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, about 40 million abortions have been committed in this nation. This is almost a third of the number of live babies born during the same time. Multitudes of people in our society have come to believe that they benefit from abortion. This extreme view comes from the radical feminists who argue foolishly that women should be free to choose to kill their unborn babies. They fail to see that if a choice needs to be made, it should be made before the concept conception, it is too late. A child who is an individual has been created of a child. fter The primary point of conflict in the entire abortion debate is the question of when life begins. If indeed life begins in the womb, then no one could disagree that the fetus (Latin for “little one) is a human being, and is subject to the rights (God’s laws concerning humanity) which befit a human being. First, the Bible establishes that God recognizes a person even before he or she is born.
“Before I was born the Lord called me” (Isaiah 49:1). Exodus 21:22-23 describes a situation in which a man hits a pregnant woman and causes her to give birth prematurely. If there is “no serious injury,” the man is required to pay a fine, but if there is “serious injury,” either to the mother or the child, then the man is guilty of murder and subject to the penalty of death. Scriptural support abounds for the humanity of the unborm child. “For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made… your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be” (Ps 139: 13-16). The Bible, in fact, uses the same Greek word to describe the unborn John the Baptist (Luke 1:41,44), the newborn baby Jesus (Luke 2:12,16), and the young children who were brought to Jesus for his blessing (Luke 18:15). There is no way that we can really eliminate abortion. We can make it illigal all we want, but that will not stop the millions of women who have the, each year. The only was to reduce the number of abortions is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies. One of those way would to make contraception more easily available.
The quickest way to reduce the number of abortions in America is to increase the availability of contraception. The shocking fact is that mllions of Americans do not have access to contraceptives or know how to use them. For many others they are prohibitively expensive. There are more than three million unintended pregnancies each year. Easier access would prevent hundreds of thousands of unintended pregnancies and abortions. New methods of birth control are also needed. By far the most common method of birth control for married couples is sterilization, because it offers the best protection against unintended pregnancy. But sterilizations are permanent. Among the “temporary” methods, none is perfect. Unless there’s a dramatic increase in government support, new methods will not be available to American women any time soon.
