Albert Camus emphasizes that there is no meaning to life, and that people should not go on a quest to seek meaning. He believes that death is final and that there is not an afterlife. From his point of view, thinking that there is an afterlife is absurd. We are all born to die. He views that life, in general, unreasonable in a variety of ways. In my opinion, I believe some of his views are not accessible for people that believe in God. However, a few of his other beliefs can be seen as agreeable no matter what a person’s religious beliefs are. Camus does not believe in God. In other words, he rejected religion and chose to live only for himself. The majority of people that believe in God; rely heavily on their view that God created them for a reason and that they are living to fulfill God’s path and purpose in life. An example of this would be a verse from the bible, “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” –Proverbs 3:5-6. Knowing that God created your life to have a purpose often gives people comfort when life becomes absurd. This goes against what Camus believes in. He views that as not being aware of the absurdity of life and escaping from reality. Albert Camus stated, “you will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.” This quote can be relatable to majority of people, regardless of religious beliefs. People should not obsess over trying to find happiness because it only creates high expectations for what happiness should feel like. A view Camus and religious believers can agree on is that suicide should not be committed. One of the main reasons a person commits suicide is because they do not see purpose in life.
Camus views suicide as a rejection of freedom and not coming to terms with life being absurd. He emphasizes that people should accept and be aware of the absurdity in life, and once a person can accept that they will find happiness in their meaningless life. Religious believers view suicide as a sin. Suicide is self-murder, and can be seen as rejecting the life and purpose God created for you. Overall, Camus’s views on the meaning of life are different from how religious believers view life. Although, the two are not entirely different, they have similar views on creating happiness and that suicide should not be committed. It can be difficult to agree with Camus’s views that human life does not have an ultimate meaning. Everyone has a purpose in life, even if it is just as simple as being a caretaker or contributing to someone else’s happiness. The mindset of thinking your life has purpose or meaning is important because it helps reach a person’s true potential and passion for life.
