Resolving conflicts as an Industrial Engineer will allow me unlimited opportunities to positively influence individuals, as well as, the entire state of Mississippi. My passion for service and engineering sparked as I volunteered in the mountains of Tennessee and will undoubtedly continue to grow as I gain further engineering exposure in my college education. Volunteering under the guidance of the Tennessee Outreach Project oganization, known as Mt. TOP, required spur of the moment ingenuity and leadership while provoking personal growth as I labored along side my Youth Renewal Group (YRG) to bring a necessary solution to an elderly woman. While I was a week long resident of Camp Baker Mountain in Grundy County, Tennessee, my five person YRG traveled to perform various missions throughout the area.
Wednesday and Thursday brought a construction project that involved building a thirty foot wheelchair ramp on the back of a home to allow Mrs. Betty, a recovering surgery patient, access to and from her back doo Upon arriving at the residence, I quickly realized that the original plan for the structure would not only conflict with the lay of the gradually inclining land, but also end directly in the middle of a grassy back yard at the furthest point from the drive. I brought this issue to the attention of our adult leader Don Paul and after a quick discussion, found myself resting against the hood of a church van using a carpenter’s pencil and my phone’s calculator to redesign the plans to include a 90 degree turn; I was careful to remember safety regulations of Mt. TOP.
In this moment I applied various algebraic and geometric concepts to an understandable blueprint in a reasonably quick amount of time. Mathematical strengths and my passion for problem solving directly influenced our end result, while helping Mrs. Betty, a deserving woman who truly appreciated our diligence and gave just as much to us as we provided for her. While some may consider Mississippi less than ideal, I find the promise of progress especially in North Mississippi. What many other states look down upon, I see as an area of untapped potential with a need for individuals that have grown to love the state and have the desire to seek progress.
The trained eye of an IE serves to expedite any process with minimal amount of waste. Although I am uncertain of my future employer, I can guarantee my work will be of great positive influence on the environment. As an avid outdoorsman, I look forward to the natural beauty of autumn each year as hunting seasons begin, but notice the ever increasing human footprint on the forest floor and marsh lands of Mississippi’s forests. My goal will undoubtedly be to eliminate the waste of a production and replace what waste may still exist with nature friendly materials. By discovering the fastest way to produce a product, I can at least improve the product to environmental pollution ratio thereby reducing the amount of harm to our timber supply as well as our wetlands. With this scholarship, I can focus on protecting the land Mississippians hold dear while exercising my mathematical strengths.
Although my impact may not be of great magnitude, my efforts may be noticed and inspire others wishing to improve our great state Experiences like Mt. TOP have enabled me to exhibit my natural leadership tendencies, make the practical application of my academic achievement, and focus on my passion to contribute what I can. I hope to channel that drive into helping not only individuals such as Mrs. Betty, but to further contribute to the preservation and promotion of all of Mississippi; that idea not only intrigues but also humbles me.
