When a new innovation is implemented in the nurses must become the expert in its operation and abilities. Researching and applying evidence-based practice is an ideal way to tutor oneself in the nursing field. It is vital that nurses teach patients and their families current and innovative information with regards to their health in language they can understand. Appropriate discharge training will promote self-sufficiency at home and limit readmissions (Manning, 2011). Understanding of the disease process will allow patients toJunco 2prevent additional illness or complications.
Topics that nurses must teach to patients and families would be the disease processes pertaining to their ailment, use of medical equipment at home, importance of genetic testing, ramifications of personal health habits, educate Other Nurses, Co-Workers. Nurses with bachelor’s degrees are often placed in positions of authority such as nurse manager. In this case, the ability to be an educator by sharing knowledge gained and instilling a motivation for learning among staff will create a stronger workforce in the unit. In this way, the ability to make optimal decisions and increase ideal patient outcomes is heightened. In past ages, nurses were known primarily for their role as caregiver. Nurses today must modify their role from caregiver to critical thinker or more appropriately, “knowledge worker” (Conrad & Sherrod, 2011).
Because paper documentation is being transformed into electronic health records, health information exchanges and other automated tools, knowledge workers must have the skills to ensure accurate data collection, reliable methods of analysis, and logical findings and conclusions (Conrad & Sherrod, 2011). These skills are vital for managing electronic equipment and innovative patient care systems that empower nurses with information to produce quality results for patients. Nurses who develop skills as data gatherer, information user, knowledge user, knowledge builder, will have what it takes to make appropriate patient care decisions.Gathering knowledge worker skills is vital, nurses are prepared to lead and support innovation in the new digital age of health care as nurses bridge the gap between their role as a caregiver and knowledge worker. They are equipped as technology role models, change agents and critical communicators and prepared for success (Conrad & Sherrod, 2011)Junco 3Innovation is vital for the continuation and vitality of health innovations such as the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
The very purposes and goals of this state of the art organization would be at stake without innovation. The IOM is an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public. The IOM asks and answers the nation’s most pressing questions about health and health care. It provides information to decision makers so they can change regulation or policy and to other influential groups who can change behavior, all aimed eventually at improving health. Through the actions of government and other organizations, IOM’s work has a large impact on the health of the nation and of the world.
The IOM slogan is “Advising the Nation, Improving Health. “With such a mission, it is imperative for the IOM to stay on the cutting edge of innovation. (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2014)Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) is a national public health institute for the United States which employs many health initiatives to inform, enhance, and guide public health efforts across the United States. The CDC’s motto is: Saving lives, protecting people. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011) One of these initiatives is Healthy People 2020 where a 10 year agenda is in place to improve the Nation’s health. Innovation is relied on significantly to reach this goal. Healthy People 2020 focuses on many objectives, one being the advanced emphasis of genomics. Its importance is heightened as we see that genomics plays a role in 9 of the 10 leading causes of death, including: heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
For people who are at increased risk for such diseases, genetic tests may reduce their risk by utilizing evidence-based interventions (United States Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], Healthy People 2020, 2011).Junco 4Many of the health issues evident in our society today are preventable. Yet, even with the abundance of innovative practices and regimens for maintaining health, health professionals, and more specifically, nurses, permit a great disparity between what we know and what we do (Blake, Malik, Mo, & Pisano, 2011). The power of example is one of the most compelling tools available to nurses. If nurses practice what they preach with regards to smoking, alcohol, diet and exercise, they will be a great power for good in patients’ lives.
Nurses must bridge this gap of knowledge and practice in our own health to be examples to others. From the beginning of time, innovation has moved history forward. It is necessary to utilize available resources of education and example to improve. Nurses play a huge role in bridging the gap between the past and the present and theory and practice. If there’s not a basic fundamental principle of health and leadership established as a fundamental, the new, innovative procedures and ways of leadership will be obscure and daunting. If we have these basic positive qualities already, the innovations and changes of the future will appear bright, regardless of setbacks.
