The book I’m reading is called The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan. The genre of this book is fiction. The setting throughout this book is Chinese Culture. The place of the story is in the main character’s family home (June). The time of the story is in both the past and present, the past being the Suyuan Woo’s (June’s mother) generation.
June is a young adult, she presents herself very neat and cleanly. Her style is very plain and modest. She’s related to most of the others in the story and gets along with a lot of them. Suyuan is a member from the club. She had recently died and June took her mother’s place in the club with three of the mother’s friends.
Some minor characters in the story are the other children of the ladies in the club. Rose’s mother is An-Mei, Waverly’s mother is Lindo, and Lena’s mother is Ying-ying. All of these mothers are Suyuan’s good friends. There’s June’s father and her twin sisters in China, who don’t add much to the story.

In the beginning of the story, June is at her farewell party in her parent’s house. She’s spending time with all of her family members and celebrating before her trip to China. June was too nervous to tell her twin sisters in China that their mother was dead. She didn’t know how to tell them without being harsh, since they thought she had been alive all these years. Her father had told her the true story of her mother in China during the war and why she had to leave the twins in China by themselves as babies, June gained a greater respect for her mother and felt that she could explain everything to her sisters in China. They expected to meet their birth mother instead of June. Once June gets to China she tells the twins all about their mother through stories. The twins get to learn more about their mother that they had never met.
I think the story was interesting. It had many things going on in the story and nearly a million characters in it, I feel that made the book more iconic and gave it more style. I think it had an interesting approach with the storytelling and everything went hand-in-hand, even if it was a bit busy. I think people who are interested in the Chinese culture and sweet family stories would enjoy this book. The Joy Luck Club involves a lot of conflict in the family but everything smooths out with love, in a way.
