My location on the political compass is leftist libertarian. This position was most similar to that of the Dalai Lama, who is well known for promoting peace and kindness to all mankind and encouraging that we all create our own happiness. I too share similar beliefs and place great emphasis on the importance of an equal society, where citizens are responsible for each other and resources are equally distributed. I believe that our society would function best with less government interference, so individuals have the freedom to self-expression and the liberty to their own personal and social interests.
Social welfare is a flawed but necessary part of the modern Canadian system. It attempts to provide stability to citizens through public programs and services in order to ensure a better quality of life. The structural social welfare system best supports my political position as it agrees that the social support in our country is flawed and exploitative largely due to a capitalist society and is in need of fundamental change. The Ontario Works program requirements is an example that demonstrates the exploitation in our system. In order to be deemed eligible for the program, the individual must provide proof of a fixed address, proof of income and assets, and record of employment. These requirements further reinforces the 19th century Elizabethan law of the deserving and undeserving poor. Being impoverished is humiliating enough in our society, it is immoral that poor citizens should have to further prove that they are worthy of assistance.
The political ideology that I most identify with is the Marxism approach. Karl Marx believed that the free market economy is flawed because it allows for “ the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.”(Lecture 2, 2019) This is because the capitalist system requires inequality. Marx’s aim was to overthrow this system in order to stop exploitation and create a classless society. This theory is still relevant in the 21st century, because the economy continues to benefit the top one percent (bourgeoisie) who own a large majority of the country’s wealth, while the middle and lower class (proletariat) live from pay cheque to pay cheque.

The political party that best fits my position on the political compass is the New Democratic party. The NDP believes that individual freedom, commitment to each other, economic and social equality is important in creating a better Canada. This party best fits my position as it recognizes the social injustice in our system, the need for social change, and aligns with my beliefs in creating a prosperous society.
