What role did women play in the American revolution? Did you know that women did a lot to protect our country? During The American Revolution, women did a lot to help and played a big role in protecting our country and fighting for independence. Women often took jobs when they were not able to support themselves, as their husband’s left for war. They became nurses, cooks, spies, and even secret soldiers, many women risked their lives at war, to protect our country. My goal for this essay is to explain how Women played a part in the independence of our country.
Women did just as much as men to protect our country, even when not being able to join the military. “ Women took many roles in the Revolutionary War” says Rebecca Beatrice Brooks, in the article, “The Role of Women In The revolutionary War”. During the early days of war,nurses were not used as much, “they became more prevalent in 1777”. During the time of The Revolutionary War, women were not allowed to join the military or fight in war, so they became secret soldiers by disguising themselves as men to fight in war such as “Mary Ludwig Hays” ,who, “replaced her wounded husband at his artillery piece, firing at the oncoming British”.
Some women became spies that helped spy on the British, although most did household jobs such as cooking and cleaning for patients in hospitals. “During the Battle of Fort Washington in November of 1776, Sania 2 Margaret Corbin was with her husband on the battlefield when he was suddenly killed. Since his cannon was then unmanned, Margaret Corbin took his place and continued firing until she was wounded herself.” she further says that, “These daughters of liberty did more than their share to help win America’s independence”.

They also came up with remedies to treat patients, aside from medicine, “milk in which oatmeal had been cooked and strained and to which beaten egg yolks, butter, and orange flavor were added) and beef tea, an extract of beef juices.” Women known as camp followers followed their husbands into the Continental Army, and some influenced politics.

They risked their life and some even lost their husband’s, families, and homes, even lost their lives.
Some of their stories are told and some still remain untold, yet so many women helped fight for our freedom and independence even when they didn’t have those rights, or the right to join in war. Men and women both did a lot to protect our country, fight for independence, and fight for freedom, for men who could not fight due to being wounded or hurt, women like Mary Ludwig Hays replaced them and fought in war.
