October 19, 1781 was the day that the Battle of Yorktown official ended with a British surrender. The Battle of Yorktown ended after three weeks of nonstop bombardment. The ocean port is one of the reasons why the British decided to stay in Yorktown, but they did not count on the French helping the colonist in the battle.

When the colonist signed the document, they were signing to become a free country, they had to repay debt to the British merchants, and they had to stop prosecuting British loyalists.
