1534 JACQUES CARTIER EXPLORES ST LAWRENCE RIVER.

In 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier set sail on his first voyage to discover a passage to Asia, but he failed. Then in 1535, he set sail again for another voyage. This is where he became the first European White man to discover the St. Lawrence River that was a gateway into North America for many of explores. I believe this time line is important because his exploration of St. Lawrence River allowed France to lay claims to land and giving Canada its name.

1608 SAMUEL DE CHAMPLAIN ESTABLISHES A FRENCH COLONY AT QUEBEC CITY

In 1608 Samuel Champlain was named lieutenant to de Monts. He set off on a expeditions up the St. Lawrence River where he constructed a fort that is now called Quebec City. The following summer, Champlain fought the first major battle against the Iroquois, making an unfriendly relationship that would last more than 100 years. Champlain had a good relationship with Hurons and helped the Hurons in an attack on the Iroquois, but they lost the battle. This is important for my top 15 because I believe Samuel change the course of history and impacted the beginning of things such as Canada.

1609 CHAMPLAIN AND FRENCH FORCES BATTLED IROQUOIS ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

After the establishment of Quebec, in 1609 Champlain joined his party of Indian friends so that he could raid the Iroquois country. Champlain and other Frenchmen hid in the woods to surprise the Iroquois. Once the Iroquois saw the firearms, they panicked and fled as they knew nothing about firearms. I believe this time line is important because it brought together two groups, the Champlain and northern Indians to work together to defeat a common enemy. They came together because of their hatred for the Iroquois and the hundreds of years of suffering that the Canadians had faced from the warfare.

1670 HUDSON’S BAY COMPANY IS FORMED

The Hudson Bay company was formed by a group of wealthy English merchants. The  King of England granted the company fur trade control of all the land used by the rivers flowing into the Hudson Bay. It was named after an English explorer Hendy Hudson who first sailed the bay in 1610 after many failed voyages in search of Asia.
The Hudson’s Bay Company is the oldest company in Canada and its history is learned about in schools today. Therefore, I think it important for my top 15.

1755 EXPULSION OF ACADIANS

In 1755 the Acadians were tricked by British Soldiers. The British soldiers went from town to town gathering the Acadians in one place and they were put in to prison. The Acadian were loaded onto ships and sent to the British Colonies. Many died of starvation, whiles others escaped hiding in the woods. The land the Acadians owned were taken over by New Englanders and other Protestant settlers. This is important for my top 15 because bullying was even present in 1755, when the Acadians were driven from their land because they because they refused to take an oath of allegiance to the Protestant British King.

1759 BATTLE OF THE PLAINS OF ABRAHAM

The Battle of the Plains also known as Battle of Quebec was a battle during the Seven Years War. In this battle the British forces defeated the French to conquered New France. This battle gave the British control over all New France, later Quebec. I believe this time line was important because it was one of Canada biggest wars where there were many fatalities.

1763 NEW FRANCE IS FORMALLY CEDED TO BRITAIN, PONTIAC REBELLION ERUPTS

The Pontiac’s Rebellion was a war that was started by the Native Americans who were not happy with the British rule in the Great Lakes Region and Ohio Country after the British won the French Indian war. The Native Americans were able to get the British government to change the rules that started the war, but this did not drive away the British. I believe this time line was important because the Native Americans did not win but were able to change rules and the outcome was not as severe.

1774 QUEBEC ACT PASSED

The Quebec Act of 1774 was an act by the British Parliament setting out ways of power in the area of Quebec. After the Seven Year War Great Britain achieved a peace agreement through the Treaty of Paris. I think this is important for my top 15 because when the Quebec act passed this changed many events for the Canadian history.

1783 LOYALIST REFUGEES BEGIN ARRIVING AFTER THE AMERICA REVOLUTION.

After the war ended many loyalists moved to Canada to escape the battle against the Patriots. Many lost their treasures and land that they built over years. The British supported the Loyalist by providing them with tools, food and helped plant crops. They lived in a colony of tents and cabins. I believe this time line was important because many Loyalists help shaped Nova Scotia because it was one of the British colonies that they settled after the war.

1793 UPPER CANADA PASSED ACT AGAINST SLAVERY

The slavery act was passed on July 9, 1793 when a former soldier witnesses a woman being sold across the river to a new owner in the United States. He brought this to the attention of Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe. When the act was passed it prevented slavery into Upper Canada. I believe this time line is important because Canada was on of the first country to ban slavery.

WAR OF 1812

The Battle of Queenston Heights was the first major battle in the War of 1812. The battle was fought because the Americans tried to takeover on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. This was the first major battle in the War of 1812. I believe this time line is important because it was one the largest battles of Canadian history.

1813: LAURA SECORD

Laura Secord was a Canadian Heroine. During the war of 1812 she walked 20 miles to warn the British forces of a future of American attack. Laura Secord had a lot of courage to run and save her husband on the battlefield in the war. I believe this time line is important because it help the British prepare for the battle.

 

1821 HUDSON BAY COMPANY MERGED WITH NORTH WEST COMPANY

Hudson Bay merger with North West Company occurred in July 1821 when the British government passed new laws controlling the fur trade in British North America. They because one under the name Hudson’s Bay Company and North West company name disappear. This time line is important because it has shaped the company Hudson Bay today.

 

1871, 1873 B.C. and P.E.I. join Canada

Prince Edward Island joined Canada in 1873 when it was only a colony of 87 000 people. Its economy was mainly farming, timber and shipbuilding. British Columbia joined Canada in 1871 as their sixth province. This time line is important because when Prince Edward Island and British Columbia join Canada, we because a bigger country and nation.

1885 North-West Rebellion; the Canadian Pacific Railway is completed

The Canadian Pacific Railway company was started being built in 1881 and was completed in 1885. The reason for this the construction of a transcontinental railway was a promise to British Columbia when they enter Confederation. It connected Eastern Canada to British Columbia. This time line is important because the completion of the railway played an important role in how the nation was developed.
