There are countless of reading methods one can use to help them better understand what they are reading and be able to identify the true meaning behind the poem, short story, etc. Some of my personal favorite reading strategies I like to use when reading are by creating my own predictions, rereading the text until I fully comprehend it, asking questions, jotting down notes and lastly by searching for patterns in the text.
I have always enjoyed reading since I was a young girl, so of course throughout the years I’ve applied new methods that I find extremely beneficial for myself to this day. Creating my own predictions of what will happen next or towards the end of the reading is a great method I like to use since it helps me feel as if I was the one in the characters place and in that situation. Mostly all of my reading methods tie in with one another. I like challenging myself by coming up with questions and taking notes as I read and discovering the true meaning behind the characters feelings.
These strategies are useful depending on the type of text I am reading since it can have a slight change to the way I may use the method. In fact, as I was reading Summer Solstice, New York City, I realized that this poem seemed to die down and become dark and cold but then had a happy, bright twist towards the end it.
The poem Execution, has a deep meaning to it which I found myself rereading certain parts over to completely comprehend its meaning. The poem Night Waitress, I could feel the pain the lady felt since she was forced to be that way since she did not having any other option. She felt as if she was invisible or even a prisoner. Every single day she would be faced with the same routine and she felt as if there is no way around it.
There is a sense of religious beliefs in the poem Execution, since the man has ‘faith’ in what he is doing. With the poem Execution, I noticed that the man did not give up on the thing he loved the most until his last breath you could say. In the poem Night Waitress, I love how the author gives us a vivid image of how some women may feel trapped and have no opinion or voice to speak up for themselves.
Many women are seen as objects by men but in this case the lady felt as if she did not even exist or as if she were invisible since no one would “see her.” She remembers what her mother taught her and sticks to it even if she feels heavy weight on her shoulders from all the pain she has been through.
In the poem Summer Solstice, New York City, the message I got from it was that the man felt like committing suicide but luckily the cops got there in time to stop him from committing something insane. Once the cop started talking to him he seemed to be a bit more relieved and they even shared a moment together by lighting up a cigarette.
