My undergraduate coursework in psychology was not writing intensive and was mostly based on recollection of information, typically through multiple choice questionnaires. I was reading the writings of scholars’ research and lab reports and tested on my ability to find key elements within. According to Dunn (2011), students may encounter different types of writings throughout their academic career that include lab reports, researched reports, letters, term papers, reaction papers, and honors thesis. (6) It is clear that understanding research is an important theme throughout these various writing types.

“Students also write literature reviews, term papers that impose a coherent structure on collections of previously published articles.” (Dunn, 2011, p. 6) This has been the majority of my writings done this week, and these types of writing have already pushed me further in my writing ability. In my every day writing, research is something that I rarely do, and never do I have to cite or reference.

Writing in psychology is different than other forms of writing because it does not provide colorful style and information. (A. Beins & B. Beins, 2012, p. 3) The purpose of writing in psychology is to present the facts and be concise in doing so. It is important to find research that supports your ideas to aid in this. According to Landrum and Davis (2010), research used within your paper should be listed in your references. (149) The overall flow of a graduate-level paper appears to be well-researched effective writing.

Communication is very important, as it was vital in the advancements of human civilization and presents itself daily through various forms, verbal and non-verbal alike. There are many forms of communication that one can use, but the one we will discuss is written communication. In effective written communication, it is importance for the reader to clearly understand the information provided (Roberson & Wallace, 2009, p. 2)

Beins and Beins (2012) discuss how written forms of communication is the basis of any learning. (1) Effective communication can be obstructed if the language is ambiguous, outside interferences distract from the matter, and the person receiving the information has their own bias. (Roberson & Wallace, 2009, p. 2)

“Plagiarism is the inclusion of someone else’s product, words, ideas, or data as one’s own work.” (Landrum and Davis, 2010, p. 179) Taking credit for another person’s work can be very detrimental to their academic career, as schools have policies that discuss academic dishonesty and plagiarism, with many including expulsion from the school. Despite the writer’s intentions of plagiarism, the act of plagiarism is still a severe offense. (A. Beins & B. Beins, 2010, p. 22) One must be mindful throughout the entire construction of a project to give credit where credit is due.

Beins and Beins (2012) encourages students to familiarize themselves with plagiarism and what acts in writing constitute plagiarism. (24) When a student is submitting a paper for academic credit, they concede that they the information within is their own, and that they are citing other’s work within when appropriate. (Landrum & Davis, 2010, p. 179)

Being vigilante against plagiarism can be stressful, as can be balancing your life and student life.
