Nutrition and fitness need to coincide for the optimal outcome. Being asked about nutrition and supplements is a common occurrence in the fitness industry. It is also often a gray area for fitness trainers as to how much and what type of advice they should be giving to a client. Therefore, it is important for a fitness trainer to do their research and verify what is ethical, legal and within their scope of practice for them to discuss with their fitness clients.
Each state is responsible for setting statutes in regards to supplying nutritional counseling. It is imperative that a fitness trainer be aware and cognizant their own state’s statutes in order to fall within the industry guidelines. Arizona is where I am currently working as a fitness trainer. Arizona happens to be one of four states that have no regulation for dietetics and nutrition practice. With that being said, there still lies a professional responsibility on the trainer to not be giving out information in regards to nutrition in which they are not qualified to give.
Following my successful completion of the ISSA Specialist in Fitness Nutrition Course I will possess the basic knowledge to explore the topic of nutrition with my clients. I will be equipped to make suggestions to clients in regards to sleep, hydration and nutrition in regards to gym performance and general wellbeing. As with any trainer in any state it is not appropriate to give medical advice or to try to use nutrition to treat a medical condition of a client.
I want my client’s to reach their goals and to achieve optimal health. To better assist my client’s I feel I need to help them examine their whole health. To help them with their whole health they need to examine their eating, exercise, hydration and rest. It is within my scope to help educate my clients on eating more lean protein, nutrient fruits and vegetables and making wiser food choices. I can help educate them on macronutrients, hydration and fueling their bodies for workouts. It would also be appropriate for me to pass on information from trusted resources on nutrition in regards to general health.
I believe I have learned the tools in this course to give vital basic knowledge in regards to nutrition to help improve my client’s overall well being and health that go hand in hand with the exercise and fitness portion of my training.
