This assignment is over leadership in nursing including one journal article summary and evaluation, one book chapter summary and evaluation, and one website summary and evaluation. First the journal article is over a leadership skills exercise focused on improving quality and safety student education. Next the book chapter is chapter one from Nursing Leadership and Management over managing client care. Lastly the website is the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) a database for health and disease research.

Summary of Journal Article

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses: A Nursing Leadership Skills Exercise (Harrison, 2014) article, describes the exercise and how adding root cause analysis (RCA) to nursing curriculum focused student nurses on quality and safety of health care. Root cause analysis includes data collection, data analysis, and action plans (risk reduction), and its rubric can accommodate each level of nursing student, proficient, competent, advanced beginner and novice. Before beginning the exercise, nursing students were given reading assignments, a grading rubric, the root cause analysis and action plan form, and a PowerPoint over QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) to become familiar with a few weeks prior.

The exercise included six case studies: a missing infant, a patient fall, a medication error, an allergy medication error, a patient suicide, and a type two diabetic missing a meal. The exercise aimed to allow students to use principles of leadership and knowledge to solve the different scenario problems. After reviewing all scenarios students chose one scenario and completed the root cause analysis (identifies possible causes of a problem) and action plan form (how to prevent reoccurrence). After the scenario the students were able to provide feedback on the simulation lab that included how difficult it was as well as the knowledge gained from the experience. (Harrison, 2014)

Evaluation of Journal Article

Harrison’s article (2014) gave a good introduction including the purpose of the study, the implementation section was very detailed describing some of the different scenarios, and the results and analysis of the results were surprisingly transparent. One aspect that would have improved the article would be a description of a completed RCA and action plan or providing some of the student’s responses. The exercise did include an evaluation questionnaire for students to identify concerns, ability to achieve goals, ability to get help, and whether they felt the exercise was beneficial. The fact that the exercise evaluates the students progress and changed if necessarily made the exercise reasonable, allowing students to express concern for difficulties. All together the article was well written and organized with the knowledge needed to follow the research. (Harrison, 2014)

Summary of a Book Chapter

Chapter One of Nursing Leadership and Management (Henry et al., 2016) is about Managing Client Care; Leadership, management skills, and knowledge are necessary for effective management of client care. This chapter includes the knowledge and skills needed for managing client care and describes leadership, management, critical thinking, quality improvement, and conflict resolution. A nurse that can inspire others to meet their goals is practicing leadership; A nurse that is able to plan, organize, direct and coordinate needed tasks is practicing management.

Nurses need to be able to use the three different types of leadership, authoritative (makes decisions alone), democratic (makes group decisions), and Laissez-faire (makes few decisions, with little planning); Management includes five major functions, planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Critical thinking is crucial to nursing, and includes interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference and explanation. Measuring performance and comparing it to the standards to ensure the best care is given is quality improvement. Conflict resolution or problem-solving needs open communication and problem-solving strategies to de-escalate an undesirable environment. (Henry et al., 2016)

Evaluation of a Book Chapter

The Managing Client Care (Henry et al., 2016) chapter is well organized and descriptive. The language is easy to understand and follow, the examples are well thought out nursing scenarios. The chapter is lengthy, although with such a broad topic the layout and flow of the chapter help work through all the material. As a student the broad topics are easy to see and separate and the narrow topics are explained in more detail as well. The vocabulary used especially helps the nursing student better understand, by already using words known the audience struggles less to understand. The chapter is a beginner’s level broad knowledge on managing client care and gives much necessary and crucial information needed to having leadership and management skills as a nurse. (Henry et al., 2016)

Summary of a Website

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website is a biomedical database with a mission to develop new information technologies to help gain knowledge of health and disease. NCBI creates automated systems to store and analyze information so that the community may coordinate efforts in gaining knowledge on health and disease. The website is useful to any student or person in the medical field and provides numerous peer reviewed research articles, journals, books, etc. in different areas of health. NCBI is a database of databases, after searching and selecting a general area a more advanced search is available on the left side of the screen allowing someone to search many databases at once when looking for a topic. (National Center for Biotechnology Information)

Evaluation of a Website

The NCBI website is very useful to nursing students, when looking for research articles the ability to search multiple health databases at once saves much time and effort. NCBI contributes to research on biomedical problems and develops and manages medical databases. The website appears very simple at first glance but after searching the first time many articles populate and it can be difficult to narrow the search for the needed information. There are advanced search options, although many useful options are missing, for example when searching in books only gives dates added or published there are no other options to refine the search. The upside to this website is it provides ample of information, although it may be tedious to search through unneeded information to find what is required. With a few adjustments this already very useful website could be much easier to operate; NCBI is a great source of scholarly information on all kinds of medical research. (National Center for Biotechnology Information)

In conclusion Harrisons (2014) article attempted improve quality and safety of care implementing the root cause analysis into the nursing program and surveying the students for evaluation of progress and level of difficulty; a role of nursing leadership is required in the exercise. Managing client care (Henry et al., 2016) requires the use of nursing leadership and management and this textbook is a valuable resource being organized and easy to understand. NCBI is a necessity for any nursing researcher, being a database of databases, the amount of research stored is significant, although sorting through the information may be difficult at times. Leadership in nursing is a necessity in every situation and aspect of the field, having leadership as a nurse is one of the most important skills to obtain.
