First, I will give you a concise introduction of GM foods. GM means a transfer of one exogenous DNA into a particular living things with genetic engineering, then the effective expression of the corresponding product. The food which use this method are named GM food.

This essay will discuss GM foods through these three parts: The development of GM foods.Current GM foods. How to deal with GM foods?

As a matter of fact, GM foods was born in the middle of the last century. And the DNA was found in the 1900s, then with the great progress in genetic technology. it is easier to straightly insert the DNA into a organisms. The antibiotic-resistant tobacco which was made in 1983 was the first GM plant. And the GM tomato which made in 1994 was the first GM food that allowed to release. And China was firstly to import GM plant with the introduction of a GM tobacco. With the creation of golden rice, scientists firstly improve food value through GM foods. Then GM foods developed more quickly in this century.

Current GM foods:

  • Soybean, GM soybean has been changed to endure herbicides and manufacture healthier oils. There are many oils use GM soybean currently.
  • Wheat, GM wheat has been invented in field trials, but has not been released commercially.
  • Corn, Corn used for food has been change to endure herbicides and to express a protein which can kill insects. More than 90% of the cereal in America was genetically modified.
  • Vegetable oil, Most vegetable oil used is produced from GM crops.

GM food is developing more and more quickly, so how should we deal with it. For GM food, some people hold positive view, but the other think it’s unhealthy.The conflicts have continued since GM food was invented. The major disagreements include if GM foods can be safely consumed? Will it harm the environment? And are them adequately tested. There is a general agreement that GM foods exists more risk to human health than Non-GM food, and each GM food needs to be checked on a one-by-one basis. No one can prove GM foods is safe.

The policy of GM foods different from countries to countries. Some countries ban or restrict GM food, and others allowing them with different levels of regulation. Opponents hold that long-term health risks have not been adequately assessed, there are Potential risks in GM foods. But science supports that the GM foods are safe currently, proposing that each GM food must be tested.

In general, we should hold Neutral opinion about GM foods. Even if it’s maybe not safe currently, we have reason to believe that it will be able to consume in the future.
