It is becoming more and more common for us to hear news about the environment and how much of a negative impact our society has to the atmosphere. Over the past decade, more and more studies have come out showing us exactly what we have done wrong and what we need to do in order to fix the problem. We will look at some of the data and attempt to figure out the issue. Sometimes it is easy to blame the government and corporations and they do have the biggest say on this, but people can also join forces as a community and fix things before it is too late.
We have been consuming and using the resources this earth gives us since we have been able to. When this first started, we had very little to no concern or awareness to what we were doing to our world. It has been more recently that we have been made aware of the damage we are doing. This damage does not only affect us but also the people who will live in this world after us. Most people can agree that we have to help the environment. However, the issue comes when we have to come together, then not many know what to do. We have to look at the statistics and see what work needs to be done. This problem can be solved, but we have to come together to save the Earth.
One of the most difficult things we have to fix is how much pollution we let out into the environment. It is not only the big manufacturers that contaminate the environment, but also our cars. We let out sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which infects our clouds. One of the effects of this Acid rain. This does not only come in the form of rain, but it can be in snow and fog as well. After we contaminate our clouds, these let out precipitation that affects us. When acid rain falls into our waters, it taints it, and can be harmful to fish. According to the EPA, fish die because of this, or their eggs are not able to hatch. There are a few fish who are able to live with this, but their food is not.
Not only does acid rain damage our water, but also our wildlife. The EPA tells us that in areas affected by acid rain, we can find dead or dying trees. The acid rain takes away minerals and nutrients from the ground that are needed for trees to grow. As if this was not enough, the components of acid rain can be found in the air we breathe. Now we are no longer talking about animals, or things being affected, but we suffer from the damage as well. Scientific studies show us that people with heart problems as well as people with lung issues are affected by this.
It increases the chances of a heart attack and gives respiratory problems to people with asthma. All of these issues come from factories polluting the environment and people using cars unnecessarily. Of course we can help slightly by using our cars less often, and finding an alternative like a bike or even just walking to places nearby. On a much grander scale, our government can give incentives to companies to encourage them not to pollute our air. Tax breaks for cooperating or even fines for emitting too many fossil fuels into the atmosphere. We have to come together to put a stop to this before it is too late.
There are multiple ways that we can help the environment. Using energy efficient products can go a long way. This could not only help our planet, but also our wallets. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a program called Energy Star that helps consumers identify quality energy saving products. Energy Star says it has helped save $450 billion in energy costs and has “delivered over 3.5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity savings”. Energy star claims that it can help save over $500 yearly on energy bills, while reducing the amount of greenhouse emissions. Of course this is a huge step in the right direction but we still have to do more. Even getting the right lightbulb for our homes can help us reduce energy consumption and help us save money. Small things in our everyday lives matter.
