I like the film “Gattaca” a lot, if I work for the IMDB(“An acronym for Internet Movie Database, is an online database of information related to world films, television programs, home videos and video games, and internet streams, including cast, production crew and personnel biographies, plot summaries, trivia, and fan reviews and ratings”Wikipedia), I will give this film a nine point five out of a ten. “Gattaca” is a beautiful story about reproductive ‘accidents’. In that story, scientists and genetic counselors can’t create love, perseverance and other beautiful things. They can only interfere with the process of human reproduction. Over the years, the film has told the public that science and technology ‘intervene’ in what human reproduction processes mean, and which types of people are eligible for birth. In the future, technology is more important than any other things, genetic is the way to decide a person.

Vincent is an unlucky boy, he’s not one of those “perfect” human. He has heart problem and difficulty in vision, the doctor said he only can live until thirty. His dream is to explore the space, however, the bad genetic made him never be able to achieve his dream. Until he met Jerome from the space center, Jerome has good genetics, but after one accident, his body was paralyzed. The two decided to change their identities. Vincent tried multiple ways to hide his genetic information, and carefully cleaned his own hair every day without exposing any clues. On the other hand, Jerome helped him prepare the genetic items that needed to be inspected before entering space center. Things are going very well, but a murder and an eyelash make things fall apart.

Out of many characters in the movie, I like “Jerome” Vincent the most. Vincent’s younger brother, Antonio, is a genetically-optimized baby. Soon he was taller than Vincent, showing a variety of qualities better than Vincent. Vincent and Anthony often race to swim to see who can go farther, the result is no suspense, the loser is always Vincent, has been like this for many years. Vincent dreamed of becoming an astronaut since childhood, but his genes made him far out of this field. The only chance he could see inside the spaceship was to be a janitor in the space center. Vincent, who was young and bloody, began to slowly accept his hopeless reality. He worked hard to fulfill his dream,

This movie was made twenty one years ago. If the movie is release today, I think it has the potential of becoming the best movie of the year. It can beat “Annihilation”, “Black Panther”,and “ First Reformed” easily. It uses old and realistic scientific settings to construct human contact and emotional apart. Under the scientific setting of the film ‘Genetically Determined Life’, how can a natural conception born ‘inferior product’ achieve its own aerospace dream with the help of others – a perfect ‘eugenic model product’? What obstacles will he encounter in realizing his dream? How does he treat the dislocation and conflict between the soul and the gene? Even if he overcomes all difficulties and realizes his dream, how will he face himself and complete self-identity?

Around this main line, the film develops the protagonist Vincent and eugenics. The complex emotional entanglement between the younger brothers, the subtle relationship with the ‘gene provider’ Jerome who helped him realize his dreams, and the love between the colleague. These three pairs of characters greatly enriched the narrative of the film and strengthened the theme of the film – self-realization and self-identity. The end of the film is undoubtedly the crowning touch of the film theme.

Jerome, who had the perfect gene, eventually went to self-destruction (of course, from another perspective he also completed self-salvation), and Vincent, who possessed the gene, realized his dream with the genetic identity of Jerome. When Vincent opened the gift that Jerome gave him on the space shuttle, and the hair of his own original color appeared on the screen, the theme of self-realization and self-identification was obvious. This film is more than just a ‘science fiction inspirational film’, but a masterpiece that explores the meaning of life with simple sci-fi settings – human self-realization and self-identity.

Poor science fiction films often require a large number of complex assumptions, and it is difficult to explain the connection between them with the help of the story itself. And the wonderful scientific works only need very simple and easy to understand settings, and through the development of the story, this simple assumption is extended to rich connotations. ‘Gattaca’ is such a work. It is an ancient motif, but it is done in a very inspiring form. Being able to impress us is always the eternal spiritual core under the imaginary package, and it is not the imagination itself.

This film is not perfect, Perhaps as the film shows, defects have the meaning that perfection can’t have, and the flaws of this film can also become an alternative interpretation of the meaning of the film. But I believe that if the film can have more investment, better drama arrangement, more expressive lens language, more accurate soundtrack, more perfect editing, this film can give people more shock than this. First of all, in the narrative, too much reliance on narration and lack of preparation is the two major flaws in the film. The neglect of the narrative branch also weakens the rich interpretation of the subject. At the same time, the lack of Vincent’s space dream source has made the story less motivational.

If the film uses more plot arrangements than narration to trigger narrative, if Vincent arranges more foreplay before the reunion with his brother and father, if there is more ink on the narrative branch of Jerome, detail his life experience. And strengthen the subtle emotional connection between Vincent and Jerome and life comparison. If you enrich the love clue between Vincent and his female colleagues, then I believe that this film will achieve a quality in content and impact. Leap.

Of course, all the branch narratives must serve the theme of self-realization and self-identification. In addition, the film is obviously too single in the use of the lens language. Although the film is not known for its visual wonders, the richer lens usage and more realistic special effects rendering will definitely enhance the film’s theme expression while bringing more shocking visual impact to the audience. If you can come to the great god of Hans loneliness to score the film, then the impact will be doubled. At the same time, in the handling of many key plots, the film failed to use the clip to create a more intense narrative rhythm, which made the film a bit dull.

The lack of changes in the editing rhythm directly led to the difficulty of achieving a relaxation of the film rhythm. I believe that the most important cause of these defects is ‘no money.’ If you can attract more investment, the creative team will have a longer creative cycle, more perfect artistic pursuits, and more comprehensive artistic considerations. A more adequate investment will inspire the director’s endless creative ambitions, making the unconfidentness of the creators apparently displayed in the film disappear. Of course, this is also some idealized imagination.
