Finland is known as the top one in the education system worldwide. Its national strategy is to offer a high level of education to the people. The education system of Finland is from their democratic character in which there is an equal opportunity to provide education to every resident of Finland which means regardless of nationality have the right to receive the same basic education in Finland. Also, training is more important than examinations wherein they don’t have tests in every periods of secondary education. Its distinctive feature in education is that it is free. In Kindergarten, they accept children from 9 months to 5 years old, and it is optional but with a fee.
The three types of their kindergarten are municipal, private and family wherein in one tutor he/she will teach 4 children. In Preschool, they accept 6 years old in which it is optional but free and lasts for one year and their main goal for the preschooler is to provide preparation for the children in studying at school, and playfully teach necessary skills. In lower secondary, this is where the real studies begin from 7 years old to 16 years old. There are 1 to 9-grade levels in lower secondary. Their classes start from no earlier than 9 am and usually end by 2 pm and have 2-3 classes a day and 75-minute per class, and their breaks are not only for snack time but to give them some time to rest and get some fresh air to get ready for their next class.
It is often to have one teacher throughout their low level secondary to determine what style of learning of a student needs, and also to be able to approach everyone by their names. It is also possible to study their second foreign language. In Upper secondary, after their 9th grade, it is optional if they will continue to study for upper secondary school or a vocational institution. Their textbooks and foods are not free anymore, but their education is still free. In their 3 years for upper secondary, they are being prepared by their teachers for their articulation Test in which it is a written exam for the state. It is their first exam that is very important to pass to be accepted to different universities.
Also, it provides knowledge and skills that will help them for their work in the future while Vocational institutions will last for 3 years that enable to develop the students in different careers and also gives opportunity to take Matriculation test to apply for universities and after the finals exam the students chooses between work or to get more training. It provides vocational competent and capabilities to be an employee in the future. In higher education, it is free for those who studied in Finnish and Swedish however it is not free for the foreign students who studied using the English language.
The two sectors of higher education are Universities and Polytechnics or higher vocational schools. Universities studies sciences and researches wherein the bachelor’s degree will be completed after 3 years with 180 credits and for master’s degree is additional 2 years with 120 credits and for scientific postgraduate degrees for licentiate is additional 2 years and for doctor’s degree as the last step is for two years while Polytechnics will teach necessary knowledge and skills that will use in the working and developing of the country and will be completed in 3.5 to 4.5 years. Finland’s education system gives universal skills in which it is more useful than knowledge and will be used in practice and the process of teaching defines their success (Education in Finland, 2017).
