I would like to initiate my response paper by expressing personal gratitude to Dr. Maya Angelou in her ‘Love Liberates’ video presentation. Dr. Angelou offers great advice about the power of love and becoming who you are meant to be. The thought of loving freely, without ego or selfish expectations, is admirable yet challenging to live for most. She did an exceptional job capturing her personal life story combined with liberation and love. More importantly, she painted a real perception of the emotional experiences she had with her mother. I found numerous messages within her presentation that hold significant value in relation to my own life experiences and felt a connection in relating to how liberating love can be. This video presentation inspired me, it is a testament of how much of an effect someone’s love and encouragement can have on another. Especially, the effect a parent can have on their own child who is still developing their own identity.

Love can feel liberating when the other person ‘s happiness is more important than your own. My connection to this presentation is the love my mother gives my sister and I. Its a rather tuff love, that liberates us to be who we are meant to be and experience in life what we need to become that person. My mother knew even though she would miss me and didn’t want me to move away for college, it was what would be best for me and my future. I sensed her fear to support the decision of my leaving for college as opposed to staying home and attending college locally, but she knew the importance of my education and how this experience would liberate it . Her mother’s strength in love and character was the connection I had to this story, similar to my own mothers love for me. It’s just as a mother bird who loves her baby chick and fears letting it off to fly, encourages the chick with love by setting it free to learn and survive on its own.

My mother always encourages me to try to experience all there is to in life and supports any dream big or small that we have She is the first to go and purchase whatever it is we may need to pursue that goal or dream, the first to encourage us to keep on pursuing any goal and the first to pick us up when we fall or in doubt. Through every cycle in my life from childhood, adolescence, and adulthood my mother supported each developmental phase I was going through at the time.

From my choices in style of hair to clothes that were in at the time, and through any emotional or identity experience I was going through, she always set me free to be myself. As she always reminds my sister and I to’ hold our heads up high or our crown will fall off’. Her love is always unconditional and liberating all in one. I feel it’s a struggle to find the balance between personal success and love, Dr. Maya Angelou couldn’t have said it any better when saying ‘ Love liberates’. Ultimately realizing love itself is a critical necessity to enlightenment, whether it’s having to set free someone I love to succeed in their own personal life dreams and accomplishments, or setting one free in distance to move forward in life or even setting free to pass on.

So I am enlightened by her words of wisdom and quote; ‘I am grateful to have been loved and to be loved now and to be able to love because that liberates’ (Dr. Angelou). There are various types of love but the highest form of love is unconditional love. To love another person no matter what their flaws may be, it transcends physical love into spiritual love.

Ultimately, I believe to love others unselfishly, is what we should all strive for. My own wants and needs often get the best of me but I will just keep on trying to remember Dr. Angelou’s words of wisdom. ‘Love doesn’t just hold—that’s ego. it doesn’t bind’
