Casablanca to me was not the war movie that I was expecting. As it was still a war movies as the film is deeply intelligent and functions both as a political allegory about World War II and a timeless romance. With this I did respect the Cinematography within the film as it favored to use a closed formal composition opposed to an open on. This is shown in the scene in which Rick flashed back to Paris and was waiting for Ilsa to show up when she arrived to Casablanca. The shots in this Flashback show a lot to the audience about how the director sets up the screen for Ilse to come in through the door in the background. This is because the camera movement that was following Sam walking towards Rick leaving space between both Sam and Rick and the door was showing in the background. With this the Cinematography also reinforces social and cultural values of that time.
With this we see this a lot throughout this film, as the cultural values of this time where primarily power, war and politics. In addition to this we see this throughout the film one example being Rick being one of the only Americans and not getting involved in the war such as America did in World War II, as they did not get involved in the war after Japan Attacked the United States in Pearl Harbor. One more key to the Cinematography of this movie was the music played by sam and through the movie. An example of this is in the article entitled “Casablanca – Historical and Cultural Context” when they talk about the song As Time Goes By when they state “…The song ‘As Time Goes By’ is used to create a romantic mood in Paris. The song is also used in Casablanca, suggesting lost love. With this they also state that “The French national anthem is played in the background emphasizes French control and involvement.” (Mr. P)
With this, Characters also play a dominate role within this movie to show specific values that they poses. Furthermore we see this from many of the characters throughout the film. The most obvious would be Rick as he is the main character. With Rick we see that his main values throughout this film change. At first we see rick as a really unreadable man with a sure look on his face at all times who answers to no one. But as Ilsa come into the movie we see his Values change from power and his business to Love and trying to get Ilsa back. We see this when Rick shuts down his café down for 2 weeks to work out things and still pays all this employees.

As for Ilsa her values are very unclear in this film. As for what I took from this film is that Ilsa’s values where not love but money and a good life. With this I say these are her values because she only loves Rick tell she finds out her husband is not dead and leaves him despite confessing her love to him. In addition to this we see that her values whatever they may be are not solely based on love. As for the other characters in the film all have their own values these are the two characters I chose where most important to the film.
