Imagine wanting to stay home from school out of fear of being bullied and harassed at school. Also, debating taking your own life just to get away from the constant torment of being bullied. This tragic dilemma is way too familiar to lots of children. Studies have shown that 17.7 percent of high school students have seriously thought about taking their own life. Bullying and harassment is still a serious problem in the U.S and should not be overlooked.
Bullying needs to be stopped because of school violence. Radkids reported that in a 2009 nationally represented sample of youth in grades nine to twelve conducted by the center of disease control. 5.5 percent of those surveyed reported bringing a weapon to school. They brought that weapon to either hurt someone or protect themselves from being hurt. No young adult should be bullied so bad that they think they need to bring a weapon to school. No one can possibly learn when he or she is at a constant fear of being hurt. When you go to school you are meant to be safe and to learn.
Children who are bullied can not learn or feel safe. Furthermore, in Thirty- seven incidents of targeted school violence between 1974 and 2000. Almost seventy-five percent of shooters reported being persecuted, attacked, or threatened while at school. Twenty-eight of the school shooters were attacked or threatened. So if bullying and harassment were stopped and did not happen again. There would only be nine cases of targeted school violence from 1974 to 2000. Parent and children should not have to fear for their safety. School is not a place for violence and bullying school is a place for learning.
Bullying in schools needs to stop because it affects your school environment and how you learn in the school environment. One study found that students who get bullied are 2x the likelihood to experience headaches and stomachaches. If a student has a stomach ache that child could more likely stay home from school. A child missing school could result in missing important lesson that could result in their grades slipping and them to stop doing well in school. If someone has a headache he or she could also stay home from school if it gets that bad. Also, it starts to get hard to concentrate when it feels like your brain is coming out of your head. This is not what a child should have to go through in a place meant for learning.
Adding on to that, 864,000 students reported staying home from school one day each month. They stayed home out of fear for the safety because a bully threatens them. If a child stays home just one day each month they are at risk the following: missing an important lesson, getting behind on their school work and taking zeros because of it, and missing a test, quiz, or report. If just one of those listed happened it could have a detrimental effect on how you do and school. Therefore, bullying can have severe effects on the learning environment and how you learn. If a child misses a school day because of bullying it could have a very bad effect on how good you do in school.
Bullying has extreme lasting effects like suicide and depression. The CDC conducted a study and found that the suicide rate was up to five percent higher with those that were involved with bullying. Parents are losing precious children because bullying continues to go on in American schools today. Teens should never even have the thought of suicide cross their mind. Teens should never attempt to take their life but sadly this happens way too often. They do this because they are tormented every day in a place where you are supposed to be safe. That same study conducted by the CDC also found that those that are bullied have an increased chance of depression and anxiety. Depression can affect how you live your whole life. You can not fully live your life because the country did not do enough to really crack down on bullying. You can never live your life in the same way if you were bullied and got depression.
Some say that bullying is not a problem anymore because of anti-bullying policies. Montana who has the least strict anti-bullying laws has the highest bullying rate. Just because the Bullying rate is lower does not mean there is still not a big problem. According to Ron Avi Astor, a psychologist at USC said:” a lot of us know the dirty secret that these programs don’t work in the real world”. What he said means that these programs do not work. If by what that opposition says is true there still is a very high bullying rate in most other states. In conclusion, bullying is still a big problem and there is a lot of work need to really make America bullying free.
You are still deathly afraid of going to school because there are bullies ready to torment you the second you go through the door. Essentially, bullying is a huge problem because no child should ever feel scared to go to school. School violence cannot happen anymore.
All we have to do is give teachers and staff of schools training to recognize bullying no child would ever to fell that torment again. Going to school just to be bullied is a terrible thing yet to many kids this is just way too familiar.
