Leonardo da Vinci was a artist who was born on April 15, 1452 in a town called Anchiano, Italy. The original Renaissance man and polymath – Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci (1452-1519) was born the illegitimate son of a notary in the town of Vinci, near Florence. In his late teens he was apprenticed to sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio and in 1482 moved to Milan to work for the Duke Ludovico Sforza.

One of the greatest pieces he made was Mona Lisa. The ‘Mona Lisa’ wasn’t the world’s most famous painting until it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 by three Italians, led by Vincenzo Perugia, the handyman who had installed the picture’s protective glass. The priceless panel surfaced two years later, the thief having claimed he wanted to return the painting to its native Italy

Leonardo’s designs later helped us to invent things like the tank, parachute, helicopter and many other things. He was also a very talented artist. In Rome from 1509 to 1511, he painted the Stanza della Segnatura (‘Room of the Signatura’) frescoes located in the Palace of the Vatican. He later painted another fresco cycle for the Vatican, in the Stanza d’Eliodoro (‘Room of Heliodorus’). In 1514, Pope Julius II hired Raphael as his chief architect.
