The health and fitness column in a newspaper is of utmost importance for the masses, those of which still take use of the dying art so to say. Perhaps foremost of the myriad of pros of the column is awareness, staying healthy is now more important than ever, the consumerist habits of our civilization have led to an increase in disease and the wheel can only be broken by reinvestigating our intake on a daily basis. The health and fitness column is a surefire way of gaining vital information whilst staying entertained. Furthermore, this column guides readers towards all aspects of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, be it what to eat and what to avoid, news about wellness programs, medicinal news or basic to more advanced fitness and training techniques.
Moving on, the fact of the matter is, most every other article or column in the news is most likely to raise human vitals while a health column can aid in reaching a more satisfying life. Misinformation and the use of loopholes in order to make a profit has been a hindrance no matter what era of human history we look at, tobacco companies sold “doctor recommended” cigarettes for decades before the general public to understand the hard way that in taking fumes has rather unpleasant repercussions. The point being, hard footed causes and publishers who take pride in their work have in the past shown us how institutions can be railroaded by spreading the truth about products and possible side effects. We live in a world where Red Bull “gives you wings” by stuffing 32 grams of sugar per 12 oz’s and companies large and small skimp off a profit by endangering human life, we also have to consider that knowledge is in the end power and only by the transference of factual data to the public can we ensure the safety of consumers.
I do not conceit to the premise that all columns, everywhere have made a positive impact things can go wrong in cases and there are always exceptions but I truly believe that reading through a health column is both informative and if applied the proper way in one’s lifestyle can make a turn for the better. Let’s further this discussion by expanding on the stakeholder analysis, and for this we have to take into account a layman who by his account picks up a newspaper off of a stand and has a few minutes of his/her attention span to read some of the contents of his purchase. What would benefit said John Doe more, reading up on who won the game last night or maybe reading up on ways to lower your cholesterol. The instance given may seem farfetched and be refuted by, “Let the layman decide” that is not the debate here, the question is how the health column benefits people and it certainly benefits them more than knowing their stock plummeted or whatnot.
