Animal rights activist are concerned about how livestock and poultry are treated in the environment that they have started organizations to protest the inhuman treatment of the animals. Animals rights organizations started around the 1900’s. Some countries have ban the unfair treatment of animals and have turned to an alternate way by free ranging farming so they can walk around during the day and brought in at night reason being because of the climate and are protected from predator so farmers can keep the numbers of animals up. Nowadays people have stopped eating meats and have become vegetarians cause of the way animals are being treated and also a way of protesting the treatment.
Some people protest by having strikes and riots to convince and to show other people how the animals are being inside a house that is so packed that animals can not move every much. There is a law called the 28 hour law that requires animals that are being transported across state lines to be slaughtered, even if the animals have water and have to be unloaded every 28 hours but this law is being weakened by loopholes and not enough enforcements and having low fines is not stopping people who haul these animals.
Most of the trailers that have animal do not even have food or water and the ones that survived the trip will have their throats slit open while they are still conscious, they are lowered into are scalding hot water to take the hair off then the skin is cut off. Many people does not know what happens to the animals before and after being slaughtered.
People do not know about how the food is grown all people see is what is in the packaging at their local grocery store not knowing what the food is being feed long as people can get to buy and eat the meat that have been bought. Animals were not supposed to be raised in this type of environment being in a confined space like that, before farmers made houses it was all free ranged and killed when the family’s that raised them. How animal farmers should change the way they raise and grow animals?

There is a organization FARM which is short for farm animal reform movement which is now called farm animal rights movement that was founded in July 1981 and another organizations called PETA, MFA. Laura Perdew has found that “The MFA investigated the truth about conditions on the factory farms the activist visited”(81) . In the 1980’s organizations fought abuse against animals raised for food. Laura Perdew claims that“PETA, FARM ,and organizations will continue to grow in size and influence into the years to become”(62).
Which now has resulted in there being more groups that are against this. The meat factories would rather have any newborn that is sick or dying to killed by this thoses newborns will never see a veterinarian so they can be seen but thrown in a kill ben so the meat industry would not have to spend any money paying vet bills.
These industries and one third of consumers do not care about the animals like they should rather than only caring about how much money they can make off an shipment of livestock or poultry. A margity of the poultry population is kept in a barn that has no windows for them the only light that they get is artificial lights that is turned on for a few hours. Now most of the organizations have adopted the AgGag laws in five states in 2012. History has shown that animals rights groups will not back down from trying to help the animals. “The movement’s first thing is to educate people about how the animals live and died “ acknowledge by (Perdew 73 ).
Nine states introduced legislation that would ban or restrict filming on farms so people will not see how animals are truly treated. Bailey F. Norwood and Jayson L. Lusk explains that “ People who have conflicting views on this matter there is no reason to believe the matter will be settled soon, or settled without a long bitter battle in the public legislative and judicial arena.”. “The choice of how animals are raised affects not just the consumer but reflect the social norms”explained by (Norwood and Lusk). They are trying to find more people to help the fight against the abuse of animals.
Farms now have started to feed their animals feed additives to make their animals fatter fast. In poultry it causes health problems cause of what they are eating. The weight they are gaining is too fast for how small their legs are. Their legs will break from how much they weigh. Chickens are fed several times a day rather than than when chickens want to eat and some are in cages so that chickens can not move around and this prevents them from losing the weight that the farmers are trying to make them gain.
When chickens are almost ready to be shipped to the slaughter houses farmers will take and shove a 12 to 16 inch tube down the throat and pour feed down the throat to make them eat more than chickens do to make them fatter and this causes their throat to become swollen and have lesions on the back of the throats. Turkeys are treated the same way the chickens are treated. Kim Master acknowledges that “todays turkeys have been bred to gain weight in their breast and have very little resemblance to their wild ancestors”(96). In the olden days it took ninety six days to grow to the slaughter weight.
Today it takes thirty seven days to grow to the slaughter weight. At around six weeks of age the baby birds will be moved to a growing houses which they will stay the reminder of their life until they reach the ideal slaughter weight. When hogs become grown it gets very crowded and this can lead to feather pecking and cannibalism which will cause stress and the bird causing it to die . Hogs are done the same way but their legs will not break. Hog are kept on a confined space limiting their moved to gain weight that farmers want. The farmers keep four to five hogs in a very small pen there is no room for five hogs to move without stepping on each other.
Breeding poultry has become harder for the birds cause of the weight chickens have gained so now hens are artificial inseminated cause toms are not able to do it themselves. A sow is also artificial inseminated or bred by the hog but it depends on how the farmers choice to do it. Once a sow is bred and give birth she is rebred over and over until she is no longer able to give birth then she is killed. Breeder hens and rosters are able to naturally breed the hens will lay close to one hundred eighty eggs a year.
Do to the environment and the feed that young poultry and livestock are eating is causing dying young. When hogs are died or even close to dying the farmers will walk through and pick up the died and throw them into a dead box and the ones that and almost dead are pick up out of the cage and up in the alleyway cause the farmer knows that they are almost died but is also starving them when farmers do this cause hogs may not die during the night or in a few hours it could take a day to two days for them to die and there is no food or water that hogs could get to.
Most of broiler chickens will have heart related mortalities than normal domestic chickens. Broilers that are a few weeks old suffer old age illnesses like heart attacks, and acute death syndrome, are some of the major causes of the the population mortality. It has also been observed by Lynda Stoner that “cardiac arrhythmias have been found in broiler chickens as young as seven days old.”
Animals are forced to accommodate the system not the other way around causing stress on the animals making them eat more than what they would if they were not under so much stress. Young nursing piglets receive a high level of natural antibodies from the sows milk, this protection only last three weeks after that the piglets are more susceptible to diseases and can catch them from their mothers which can kill them if not vaccinated properly. In the poultry population Lynda Stoner explains that “the faster the birds grows the higher in incidence of leg problems”. At such a young age they are being fed more than what a chick would that lives in a backyard, this causes them to grow faster than what their bodies can handle and will cause their legs to break.
The houses that these animals live in are too small for the animals to live in. Hogs are only given so much room and even less if it is a sow that has just had piglets she is put into a crate in the middle of the pen that they call a gestation crate which is only seven feet long and she is only able turn about two feet around in or even move all she can do is stand up and lay down while her piglets have the rest of the pen.
Farmers say that this keeps the sow from laying on or stepping on the piglets. Farmers will put five hogs in one pen when they are older when they are younger they will put almost ten to twelve piglets in a pen. It is still a struggle for that many pigs to stay in. hogs and piglets will lay on top of each other cause there is no more room for them to lay even when trying to walk they have to push each other out of the way to get to the waterer and feeders.
When the farmers walk down the alleyway they will hit the pigs that are laying down to see if hogs are dead or not. The hogs are scared of the farmers when they walk the alleyway causing them to jump over each other to get to the back of the pen to stay away from the farmers. Being in a such a small confined space will cause them to hurt each other by biting and fighting each other, chewing on the bars and from standing on cement floors it starts to mess their feet up.
Farmers think that pigs staying in a confined cage, pen or on a short tethers to prevent them from getting exercise , which if they get exercise they will build muscle instead of making fat and make the meat tough. Tethers are rope or tubing that is tied around the pigs front feet so they can only so many feet Keeping pigs in such a confined space prevents them from doing natural habits like rooting, rolling, and etc.
The farmers are causing pain to the animals by how they are doing what they do to the animals. Hogs are killed by electrocution or stunning then is by bleeding out once they are dead they are lowered into vats water that is scalding to remove the hair that is on the pigs. Dr. temple Grandin’s had instructions for electrical stunning on a hog stunned with sufficient amperage in the correct location will feel no pain insufficient amperage and improper current path will cause the animal pain.
Kim Masters acknowledged that “Farmer have used cardiac arrest stunning and is the technique most large hog slaughter plants use.”(71) An endemic studies have shown that ninety percent of birds have a detectable abnormality in their gait. Poultry suffers from chronic pain and discomfort. Poultry have different thing that is happens to them like tibial dyschondroplasia, twisted leg, tibia septic arthritis in joints.
Piglets that are a few weeks old are subjected to teeth clipping, tail docking, and ear notching. Piglets will have their tail cut or docked off at a few weeks after they are separated from the mothers. Piglets will also have all eight of their needle teeth clipped so they can not hurt themselves when they are older and so they can hurt the sow. This is all done without anaesthesia and is very painful to them. The pain from having their needle teeth being cut can cause them to not to eat any food till the pain in mouth to go away.
