In literature, cruelty is often used as a motivation or a major political factor. In Animal Farm written by George Orwell, Manor Farm symbolizes Russia and the Soviet Union under Communist rule. More importantly the animals on the farm represent any naive human society, whether that be capitalist, socialist ect. All acts of cruelty are important to the overall theme of Leadership and corruption, As well as the Lies and Deception. Cruelty is used throughout this novel to control and persuade the character’s political and societal beliefs.

Animal Farm is a novel about an Animal revolution over an oppressive Farmer. The original caretaker of the farm, Mr. Jones treated the animals poorly. The animals were overworked, neglected, not being fed. Irony is displayed when the same animals who over through such leader, later become everything the animals revolted against. The pigs on the farm came to ruling and exhibited the same cruelty by treating the farm animals the same, if not worse.

Immediately after the Revolution the pigs began their exploitation of the less intelligent farm animals, telling the animals that the products they worked hard to produce are being used for the pigs health. “You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? …Our sole object in taking this is to preserve our health. Milk and apples contain substances absolutely necessary to the wellbeing of a pig.” stated on page 42. This is of course is a small example of the large scale manipulation that occurred throughout the book.

The pigs used their intelligence to control the farm animals to get into the higher position that they wanted to be in. A lot of the rules and routines that the pigs declared on the farm only benefited the pigs. Having the animals work endless hours, dealing with the difficult labor. The farm lost more than half of the animals on it in the process. All in which did not matter to the pigs because they were megalomaniac, having the support of very few gave them the motive to continue.

The novel reveals unfortunate characteristics of the wrong people getting a sense of power and how corrupt these type of leaders can cause a system to become without having its supporters aware of it. Acts of cruelty are used to deceive its victims. The animals in this novel and Soviet Union in which the farm represents, were Vulnerable enough to be deceived.
