In today’s society there are two mindsets that kids could be in. Those two mindset’s are fixed and growth mindset’s. A fixed mindset is what separates students from being motivated which could lead into success. In the article “Boosting Achievements with Messages That Motivate” By Carol Dweck. She explains the mindset of kid’s and explains also that it has to do with intelligence.

Some kids in society today have a fixed mindset. In some cases, they have that mindset because of their parents. Some parents tell their children that if they do badly in a subject or on a paper they will be grounded. Some parents might even tell them that they aren’t smart enough and that is never true. Once a child hears that, they won’t ever think that it is okay to make mistakes in life. Fixed mindsets are the worst that a person could ever have.

Students in today’s world should have a growth mindset. According to Carol Dweck in “Boosting Achievement with Messages That Motivate” she states” The most motivated people are the ones that believe their abilities can develop through effort and learning”. When students have a growth mindset, failing isn’t the end of the world, but a new beginning because they are willing to try harder instead of giving up so fast. Growth mindsets show your ability to learn. That shows your intelligence as well and then you start to believe in yourself.

I myself have a growth mindset. When I fail, I will always try harder and put 100% into what I do. Never giving up is a big part of a growth mindset because if you give up you won’t ever believe in your ability and intelligence. “Some students believe mistakes and setbacks mean that they don’t have the ability” (Carol Dweck). I was one of the students who believed that I wasn’t smart enough. I always believed that if I made a mistake that it was the end of the world, but now I know mistakes are sometimes a great thing to make in life. By having this mindset I have been able to go for my dream and never give up on it. I have made it this far because of many mistakes and I am grateful.

The article “Boosting Achievement with Messages That Motivate” by Carol Dweck is a great article that talks about the mindsets that students have. A quote said by Carol Dweck states “Teachers should assure students of their abilities and their intelligence’s”. I believe that she is correct about this statement but I also would like to add that parents should also help their children with that as well. I believe that because fixed and growth mindsets are what separates students from being motivated. Carol Dweck’s article has helped me determine my mindset and showed me that when I was little had a fixed mindset.
