God is creative; God created the universe; he created all of the mountains, lakes, rivers, and oceans. God created wildlife and God created man in his own image to help take care of his creation and by doing this, he is constantly changing our physical world. God is equally creative through his use of divine intervention with the intention of directing humans toward certain paths and away from others. The bible is loaded with many examples where this is the case, for instance, King David, who sinned by committing adultery with Bathsheba. Recognizing his failures, David begged God for forgiveness and begged God for another chance to prove himself worthy. “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, so that sinners will turn back to You” (New International Version, Psalm. 51:10-13). Here, David asked God to help him get back on track with his salvation after making several bad choices. God granted David this wish and created in David a renewed spirit because he had bigger plans for David. These plans revealed the birth of Jesus and the spreading of Christianity. God is creative in how he uses people, often with less than stellar qualities, to spread His message to so many people, whether it be done in the blink of an eye or over a period of years because it shows people that no matter how many terrible mistakes a person makes in life, God has a creative plan for bringing us closer to Him.
God is a teacher and the bible is His textbook. NIV, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work,” (NIV). One obvious example are the Ten Commandments that God sent as a set of moral instructions to live by his grace. “He gave them to us for one reason: to make our lives better. God loves us; He loves us so much that He does not want us to destroy ourselves by ignoring His moral laws. The bible contains many proverbs and parables meant to instruct people of all ages on how to seek God’s grace. For example, God used James to remind Christians about the trials of Job. “With the many forms of suffering facing these early Christians, it was important to be reminded that they, like Job, had done nothing to deserve their suffering but were to patiently endure for the sake of Christ. Just as Job faced many struggles, they would face hardship in living for God,” (Houdmann). Today, the story of Job is just as important to teach people as it was in the past. The patience of Job serves as an inspiration to Christians who face times of struggle and suffering. No matter what happens, we are called to follow Job’s example as we patiently endure in service and worship to the Lord, remembering that our God is “full of compassion and mercy,” (Houndman).
God is a healer. He uses his knowledge of all things to heal those who are seeking treatment and cures in both a physical and spiritual sense. One particular proverb comes to mind; “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body,” (NIV, Proverbs. 4:20-22) This quote means that God is the ultimate benefactor of a healthy mind and spirit. He spends much of his time seeking out the “sick”, people on a sinner’s path, by healing people who are spiritually broken and “binds up their wounds”, (NIV Psalms 147:3) Why then, does he allow people, especially babies and children, to suffer terrible diseases that bring great hardship or death? Simply, humans have free will to nurture or abuse God’s creation of the earth and their physical bodies. I cannot help but think of the phrase, “what doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger.” God may have created the heavens and the earth, but he did not tell people to do crazy things like infect waterways with pesticides that cause cancer in humans. Humans are responsible for that and are slow at reversing harmful deeds that are hurtful to others and the environment. Sometimes, people make mistakes in life that are harmful to their family and friends, but can also have lasting effects on the community. When any, some, or all these people are ready, God can start the healing process with his words and heal the wounded and suffering, so they might all learn the ultimate truths of his blessings.
