The article “school violence” discusses what school violence is and how it starts. School violence is criminal acts committed at education institutions. Thousands of students face a daily threat of violence in our schools and universities. Many people believe that school violence is influenced by video games, rap music, horror movies, the media attention, bullying and people who suffer from mental illness. There are all kinds of types of school violence, but the one people focus on the most is the deadly shooting sprees. One case sixteen-year-old Brenda spencer opened fire at an elementary school across the street from her house. She killed two adults, and eight children were wounded. In the late 1990s school violence seemed to skyrocket. Another shooting spree occurred in Jonesboro, Arkansas, two middle school students pulled a fire alarm then ran to the nearby woods and shot classmates as they left the building.
Five died and ten were wounded. Another act occurred when a teenager named Kipland Kinkel Murdered his parents, then went his Springfield, Oregon, High school the next day and opened fire. Two students died and twenty-five were wounded. Another highly incident occurred in 1999; two Columbine students brought a trove of weapons and explosives to school. They taunted fellow students before killing them. They killed thirteen and wounded twenty-four. The columbine massacre caused a lot of copycat shootings. Another huge shooting that occurred was what is known as the Virginia Tech. Seug-Hui cho entered multiple buildings and killed thirty-three and wounded twenty-four before killing herself.
One incident involving very young children occurred 2012 at an elementary school in Newton, Connecticut. A twenty-year-old man, Adam Lanza, killed his mom and went to Sandy Hook Elementary school, where he opened fire, killing many before killing himself. He suffered from mental illness. Some people claim that teens are more violent than ever. Many believe that video games, rap music, horror movies, and rock music influence teens to be violent. Others think that people are violent for the media attention. Some people believe that certain school climates encourage cliques and foster social humiliation. Forty-nine states had enacted anti-bullying legislation to combat bullying in schools.
Beside from bullying almost all school shooting teens weapons came from perpetrators” own homes. Many feel better gun control laws would help reduce overall US murder rate. Weapons should not be so easy to get. The article states, “Better gun control laws, many argue, would help reduce such extreme episodes and overall US murder rate.” Many parents have guns that aren’t locked up.
They need to lock them up so teens don’t have easy access to a gun. Many parents think it is okay to buy a gun for their son or daughter. I feel it’s not okay for a teenager to have a gun. Many of the shooting that were done by minors got their guns from family members. Brenda Spencer for an example the article states “the weapon she used had been a Christmas gift from her father.” Maybe if her father didn’t buy a gun, she wouldn’t have killed two people and wounded eight. Parents need to check on their kids more. They might be getting bullied and that can cause them to something crazy like a school shooting. The article states “some people contend that certain school climates encourage cliques and foster social humiliation.”
A student might be getting bullied for not fitting in. If a parent is there for them the problem can be resolved. Also in some cases a person who suffers from mental illness started a shooting; Adam Lanza killed his mother and many students at a nearby school. This wouldn’t have happened if he had received help. Clearly he was not at his right state of mind.
He should have been sent to a Psychiatric hospital. If parents would watch their kid’s behaviors and find they help if need things could have been prevented. Many people believe that video games causes people to be more violent. The articles states, “other people tie school shootings to the preponderance of violent media materials marked at teens begging in the 1990s.” I do not agree with this at all. I feel that if someone is violent that’s with in their inter-self. There has to be something wrong with them already if just playing a video game will trigger them to shoot someone. What is the cause of school violence? No one really knows the real reason for violence. Some believe that video games, rap music, rock music and horror movies cause teens to be violent. Others believe that a student not fitting in can cause them to explode and shoot classmates or others. Some people believe that if we had better gun control laws the US murder rates would go down. The thing is there is no one reason for school violence.
