Abortion: The Right to Live
Ever wondered what life would be like without someone? Abortion has quickly become a moden holocaust that is breeding unparalleled violence into our apathetic society, taking it in a direction from which we may never return. The American generation in recent decades has transtormed society into a quick-problem solver for every incommodity, allowing for injustice, Such as abortion, to occur on a daily basis. Unplanned pregnancies are quickly being “tixed” by the cold, callous, compromise of an abortion due to selfish ambitions of women who simply choose to not have the child for the troublesomeness,with disregard to the aftermath ot the decision that was made.
This paper will scrutinize how abortion has changed our society for the Worst since 1973, when the four Supreme Court judges twisted the 14th amendment to the perverse ruling of abortion, and why it should be illegal. Abortion is the intentional killing of a human fetus by chemical and/or surgical means. Human beings have unique and incomparable value in the world. Christians and Jews believe this is the case because human beings are made in God’s image and likeness, “For [He] created my inmost being: [He] knit me together in my mother’s womb” (New International Version, Psalms 139.13-14). Anyone who holds that humans are special and worthy of unique moral consideration can grant the thesis that the fetus is, without question, a human being. “Medical textbooks and scientific reference works consistently agree that human life begins at conception,” (Alcorn, 7). Upon fertilization, a human individual is created with a unique genetic identity that remains unchanged throughout his or her life.
The child has thirty-six chromosomes, a developing brain, and a heartbeat within the first month. This individual has a fundamental right to life, which must be protected. “And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God,” (Micah 6.8), and not to end life because it is God who decides. Abortion has become the solution to an inconvenience in today’s sOciety, but many d0 not take in the factors of the truth, injustice and murder that are taking place in the abortion of a child. Women today are looking to abortion as an answer to the dilemma they have to tace with the child they are carrying. Abortion is a vital concern in the world that has become more than Just an ethical issue. Ihis controversial issue has been brought up in the United States, with the Roe v. Wade, Doe v Bolton, & Casey v. Planned Parenthood court cases displaying that Supreme Court’s ruling in each case was irrelevant in supporting one another “On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe v. Wade. That same day, the Court also decided Doe v. Bolton” (LiveAction.org).

Abortion was legalized in the United States via the famous court case of Roe vs Wade. Roe was a single, pregnant woman who was fighting the state of Texas where the law statecd she was not allowed to get an abortion. Even though millions of abortions have been pertormed since 1973, the debate over whether it ever should have been legalized is strongly argued by many Americans, as well as people of many other countries and culrures. The beliefs and opinions of hese people are generally divided into two groups, those who call themselves pro-choice and those referring to themselves as pro-life. Pro-choice argues that abortion should be legalized without the intluence of government or religion. Pro-life believes that unborn babies are human from the moment of conception and, therefore, abortion is immoral and effectively killing innocent human beings. The beginning of human life is where the heart of the abortion debate unravels.
Pro- choice advocates, such like Planned Parenthood, are not seen explaining where they believe life begins. Their most usual tactics is to shift the debate from whether abortion takes a human life to how comprehensive sex educauon and contracepuon can lower aboruon rates. The ant- abortion groups have called themselves “pro-life, asserting that the destruction ofa fetus is an act of murder” (Meserve, 3). As stated by Harry C. Meserve in his article, “Editorial: Pro-Life, Pro-Choice,” those who call themselves pro-life continue having a “futile debate over the precise moment when life begins° (Meserve, 3) and believe that no matter what stage of the pregnancy the child is in, it is considered a human being. Meserve continues arguing by asking if it would be, “an affirmation of life to bring into the world a child whose hope of development into a normal human being is forlorn at best?” (Meserve, 3).
Abortion also allows a mother to decide whether or not she should allow her child to be born if it has severe medical problems. If a parent finds out that their child is deformed or has a disease which may impair it for life, they may decide that abortion is the better option. Meserve continues by stating that if one is pro-life for fetuses does that mean they are anti-life tor the mother? le states that if one is pro-life, the pro life policy should extend to other issues in ociety such as: poverty, illnesses, disabilities etc. (Meserve, 3). Jerome Lejeune, the French geneticist who discovered the chromosome abnormality that causes Down syndrome, stated that “To accept the fact that after fertilization has taken place a new human has come into being is no longer a matter of taste or opinion… The human nature of the human being from conception to old age is not a metaphysical contention, it is plain experimental evidence” (clmagazine.org).
One is not debating the merits of different strategies to lower abortion rates, one is attempting to debate whether or not abortion takes human life, and one side almost never seriously addresSes it. Maybe its because people have a nuch easier time defending abortion when we don’t talk about when life begins. What Meserve fails to realize is that by allowing an abortion to occur, the mother is extinguishing any chance for the child to make any contributions to society and she is taking away its right to life and its right to become someone. The mother would be shedding innocent blood, God has called Hlis people to, “to love the Lord your God and to walk always in obedience to him.. so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed” (Deut. 19.10). What if that child would have solved the cure for AIDS, autism, or cancer?
The opportunities died in the killing of that child. In the peer-reviewed journal Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, a survey administered in September 2005 asked women why they had an abortion, “73% 0f participants said they could not afford to have a baby, and 38% claimed giving birth would interfere with their education and career goals” (Finer, 1). Eight hundred, thirty-one million dollars are spent on abortions every year and one in three women will have an abOrtion before the age of 45 (Finer, 3). This shows how people have been taking advantage of this option and why it should be illegal. Many argue that a fetus cannot experience pain and therefore it will not suffer during the abortion, but it can. The same argument of whether or not abortion should be legal can tie back to the idea of whether the death penalty should be legal tor innocent people.
It is the same situation with a fetus in the womb- that child is innocent, and the life of the child should not be taken away. A father who was unwillingly part ot an abortion with a previous partner he had, described abortion as such, “Particularly if you’ve had kids, and I have, I think of what a reflection of your own ife kids can be. You know, you look at yourself, you see yourself in your Own kids, and once you’ve been able to experience that, then to make a decision that you’re ot going to [be al father has a lot of misgivings” (Reich, 10). When women get abortions, the majority of the time it is because they are young and are unable to raise a child. They have other responsibilities such as their education, a career, or maybe they are not in a financial situation where they can take care of a child. In the United States, abortion is certainly taken advantage of, but it should be abolished altogether, it should not continue as a practice. Women should not be allowed to have an abortion in any part of their pregnancy no matter how inclement the situation may be. If the woman was responsible end igh to partake in intercourse, she should also be responsible enough to make the wise decision of having her child. “wWe must not legalize procedures that kill the innocent just to make the killing process less hazardous” (Alcorn, 16).
In conclusion, abortion should become illegal; the fact that one is giving the woman the choice of whether or not to end the life of the child is nota choice the woman has the right to make. God is the author of life and the only one authorized to end life. Life is a precious gift that should be enjoyed, “children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward (Psalms 127.3). No adverse circumstance for one human being changes the nature and worth of another human being.
