The very interesting novel comparing two classes of people. In my essay, I will be convincing the jury that Johnny did not commit murder. Bob and his friends came looking for a fight for no reason. He acted in self-defense, protecting Ponyboy of death, and himself of getting extremely hurt. It was late, and cold at night. Neither Ponyboy nor Johnny were expecting what came to them. As soon as they saw a blue Mustang they knew they were in trouble. From the way the five boys got down from their car, it looked as though they were extremely drunk.“ Five Socs were coming straight at us, and from the way they were staggering I figured they were reeling pickled”. Earlier that night, Ponyboy and Johnny were spotted with some of the Socs friends, so they in return came to get their revenge.

After exchanging rude comments from both sides, the boys began to physically get aggressive. One of them grabbed Ponyboy by the neck, and pushed his face into the water. Another two grabbed Johnny and threw him to the floor so they could deal with him after. Ponyboy was beginning to run out of breath in the water. Second by second he was getting closer to death. “ I ducked and tried to run for it, but the Soc caught my arm and twisted it behind my back, and shoved my face into the fountain.” – “ I couldn’t hold my breath any longer”. Johnny, like anyone in their right mind, didn’t want to see his friend die, so he acted fast in what he thought was the only way to save Ponyboy.

Lastly, Johnny only reacted the way he did, because he knew what was coming for him if they finished with Ponyboy. They were going to ‘beat him up’ like they did before. They had previously hurt him, scarring him not only physically but emotionally too. “- And they had a blade . . . they were gonna beat me up . . . .” ”Like . . .- like they did before?” “Yeah, like they did before”. He didn’t want to face what was coming for him, or what was coming for Ponyboy so he killed Bob. In conclusion Johnny is innocent. He acted in self-defense, and in fear of what would happen. It was not his fault those boys were looking for a fight, nor that they were drowning one of his closest friends. Who knows what could have happened if Johnny didn’t kill Bob?
