Coming of age is a term used to describe the transition between childhood and adulthood. For some cultures, coming of age is determined at a certain age when a child is no longer a minor. Have you wondered though, how much The Aztecs have an amazing Mexican Culture. Although, they created many of the Mexican foods, like pozole and tamales or dances, they also created a way of determining the difference between a man or a boy, and did this in a very gruesome way.

Many cultures perform coming of age rituals, and many of them performed in a very gruesome way. The Aztecs had their own way of performing the Coming of Age. They had a totally different aspect on how to perform this ritual. To perform the coming of age event, there had to be sacrifice. The Aztecs had a cycle in which they performed 1 rituals every month for 18 months. The victim would be painted as part of the ritual. They would be placed on a slab where their heart would be removed. After cutting the heart out of the body, they held it up to the sun and sang a ritual song. The victim’s body would then be dropped down the stairs of the temple or pyramid. After the body is thrown, It was the killers choice of how they wanted to dispose of the body. The most popular ways of disposing the body were, feeding them to animals, putting them on display until they decomposed, and sometimes the killers would eat the bodies. The process was very atrocious, they had to capture, kill, and decompose of a body, just to become a warrior. The Aztecs had their own way of performing the Coming of Age even and a totally different aspect.

Yes, performing this ritual was very awful, but how can this affect us today you may ask? Imagine your brother/sister being captured and killed just to prove someone else’s worthy. This ritual can affects many of us, considering the fact that you murder someone to prove something. I feel that the Aztecs were wrong for performing this ritual. The victim had to be pulled by people, while being stabbed alive until they get your heart. Imagine your family or you going through this event. If this event were to be performed in our current time zone, there would be many consequences. The authorities would be involved and the ritual would be ban and the people who captured the man would go to jail. The Coming of Age for the Aztecs gruesome. If this event still went on, it would affect the many people, as them or their family would be captured and murdered.

All of these things the Aztecs did to people were extremely savage. They murdered just to prove worthy and it can affect us dramatically if it were to still happen. The Aztecs were very ferocious, but they also introduced us to many delicious foods, universal education and Antispasmodic medication. Aztecs mostly ate maize and fruit such as avocado & tomatoes. They also ate something called Atole which was a type of porridge. The Aztecs also ate food such as Tamales and Posole. If Aztec warriors worked hard, they would be rewarded with chocolate which was very expensive. Only the Elite could eat the chocolate or make a hot chocolate or just a chocolate drink. The empire was one of the first places in the world to have mandatory education for everyone. Education was going to become more and more important around the world – but the peoples of the Aztec empire were on the cutting edge. Many countries only gave education to the upper class man. The Aztecs gave education to everyone, from boy/girls to older man/women. The Aztecs practised advanced medicine. They used a type of antispasmodic medication. This medicine could prevent muscle spasms and relax muscles, which may have been very helpful during to us as doctors use it to perform surgery. The Aztecs practised advanced medicine. Conclusion

What do you think of the Aztecs and their Coming of Age ritual? I have mixed emotions of how I feel about the Aztecs. Although they made very delicious foods we still eat to this day. They performed very savage events. These rituals or events can affect us if it were to be done today.
