The deadliest form of weapon man has ever invented, capable of killing millions of people and obliterating entire cities. Inhumane weapons that are fatal during the attack and leave heartbreaking outcomes years after the detonation. Despite this, there are more than ten thousand nuclear weapons in the hands of several nations across the globe. Although these extreme weapons were never created for the mere purpose of causing harm, their very existence still carries significant (consequential) repercussions.

Nuclear weapons played a pivotal role in international security during half of the twentieth century; although, despite the rapid increases of communications and technology, there have been no other large scale conflicts since the Second World War. Nuclear weapons are the most detrimental instruments ever created giving us the upper hand, the superiority, and making the US a superpower. This gives the idea that creating a nuclear-weapon-free world doesn’t ensure that our future generations would live safely from great wars that kill nearly millions of people in a matter of days; hence, they are crucial for defense. They eliminate great powers saving the lives of millions; they end wars in a matter of seconds saving us time and money.

Although, nothing is ever as it seems in the United States or everywhere. Take this into account, when Albert Einstein had his initiative which would ultimately lead to the construction of the atomic bomb; he warned us that once we began and we used it, “we thus drift toward an unparalleled catastrophe. Had I know that the Germans would not succeed in producing such a weapon, I never would have lifted a finger.” He foresaw a ruinous future that could be predicted by anyone had we not been stuck in our heads with thoughts of war, and ever since then, we have continued going down this path of weapons of mass destruction playing with them as if we were god. Rethinking the role of nuclear weapons in national defense is crucial for the continuation of the human race.

The primary role these weapons of mass destruction serve is to deter potential adversaries from an attack or threat on the United States, our allies, and our interests. One can destroy a whole city, killing millions while jeopardizing the environment and the lives of many. The people that were killed on impact, and the ones that survived to tell the story of what happened. Let’s talk about the incident in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was 1945 nearing the end of World War II when we deployed these weapons. Japan had tried to cut off the United States’s supply of oil and other resources.

It was too dangerous to try and invade Japan as it would lead to a disastrous amount of casualties. At that moment the President at the time, Truman, gave the order that the new weapon, the atomic bomb, should be used to bring the war to a speedy end. Thus, on August 6, 1945, an American bomber dropped the five-ton bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima and three days later another one was released in the city of Nagasaki. A few days after these incidents, Japan caved in and announced their surrender.

The Japanese culture had been memorably altered both by the defeat in the war at the hands of the United States and by the biological effects that followed years later. These changes in Japan would only be the first chapter of the narrative of atomic power, a new evil unleashed in the world. The atomic bomb caused various repercussions upon all of the living organisms within the area. Some were fortunate to have the short term effects, but the not so lucky were stuck with the long term. You see the atomic bomb gathers its power from a tremendous amount of nuclear energy release called nuclear fission resulting in vast amounts of radiation, a blast, and heat, making sure to leave a mark wherever its master chooses it will hit.

The ecological consequences of dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki left the fauna there with enormous amounts of radiation. It has the power to alter the DNA sequence, cause cancer, kill cells, damage tissue, and is the origin of many other health issues; hence, the organisms that did survive the impact, had drastic changes happen. The life there has since moved on creating children and future generations, but there is a consequence that comes with surviving such a catastrophic event. Their infants were born with mutations that will eventually be passed on to their kids and so on, triggering new health issues never seen before. Some of the places were far from being safe for people. The radiation was too much and there are still traces of it today. These places remain uninhabitable.

We are no longer in World War II or in any major wars for that matter. The nuclear age is over and there is no reason we should keep fueling that fire. The possession of nuclear weapons will continue to bring an immeasurable number of drawbacks, whether it be the fatal repercussions it could bring or just their existence in the world. There are many more useful ways we can spend our money on. As long as nuclear weapons are in our armories, there will always be the slightest chance of them being used again, either on purpose or accident. The only way to put a stop to this would be for nuclear weapons to follow the same fate as chemical and biological weapons and undergo a worldwide ban on both their possession and use.
