My name is Fatima Ejaz and my major is Cyber Security. I am a junior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. My internship story started last year in September when I got selected for the internship program at Tennessee Valley Authority. This internship has helped me to grow as a person not only at a personal level but also on a professional level as well. The main purpose of this internship program is to allow interns to do job shadows in different departments of the Tennessee Valley Authority.
In last September the first department that I was assigned for job shadowing which I am still working in is Planning and Operation. This department is also called the IT help desk which provides information technology facilities and customer services to all Tennessee Valley Authority employees who are working at TVA locations in parts of seven southeastern states. My main expectation from this internship program is to gain experience and skills that are required in my field because I have never done an IT job before so this internship is a golden opportunity for me to expand my horizons and enhance my skills As a Computer Science major, it is very important for students is to put hands on learning different skills because hands-on learning is very important not just in this field but in every academic field.
As an intern, I have different responsibilities and duties such as providing the best customer services. Escalating tickets about different issues as quickly as possible, configuring and resolving problems for desktops, laptops, servers, printers, VPN, and telecommunication. I am also getting training about documenting tickets related to different issues, installing different software, resolving issues related to Microsoft and managing and enabling TVA’s employees’ accounts.
My expectations from this internship program like I said is to expand my horizons and gain skills and knowledge that are required for this field and my advisor Jim Parker’s expectations from me is to provide best customer service while resolving different issues and even if I am unable to solve the problem right away I am expected to document everything about the issue and escalate it as quickly as possible. I am also expected to stay available for the call and learn how to solve new issues through training sessions.
My internship program has given me an opportunity to evaluate my weakness and strengths. One of my biggest strengths which I get to know about myself during this program and which has really helped me in achieving my goals is my willingness to work and to learn different skills and my biggest weakness which I have discovered about myself is self-doubting but my supervisor Jim Parker has helped me to overcome this weakness and I hope that this internship will help me to succeed in my professional career.
