In both videos we see Leyla Tacconi and Amy Cuddy talking about non-verbal communications, and throughout each video we are given insight as to how different non-verbal communication methods are seen in the world and how they are interpreted There are many factors that you have to keep in mind when arguing with someone in person, and these factors might affect one’s career in many different ways.
The first video is a TED Talk given by Leyla Tacconi, and her talk mainly focuses on non-verbal communications and how they are translated to people in the world. When we are talking about non-verbal communication we refer to the other ways of sending a message besides words such as, facial expressions.
Facial expressions are a big part of understanding of how a person feels when they are not saying anything. As talked about in the video, facial expressions are a type of “expressive communication”. Different looks on a person’s face can show their thoughts and feelings, this can be shown through a smile, frown, raised eyebrow, yawn etc. Facial expressions can be used to display, cover upl, and fake emotions. People can both consciously and subconsciously make facial expressions at anytime when given information or just talking to someone.
The second video which is a TED Talk given by Amy Cuddy, focuses on how body language and gestures send messages to other people in different ways and some of these different ways are through dominant body language and gestures, and powerless body language and gestures. Body language is the use of physical behavior such as mannerisms to communicate nonverbally, and most mannerisms used are done by instinct, not choreographed. Gestures are the same way, by giving someone a simple gesture such as a wave, it can be seen as welcoming.
But both Body language and gestures can be used to communicate how we feel to other people without words. Amy Cuddy suggested that our body language impacts how we think and feel about ourselves. What this means in other words is that by being in a powerful stance, we can make ourselves feel powerful. Amy Cuddy did a study at Harvard University, where people sat in either a power pose or non-power pose for two minutes, and what Cuddy found was that those who sat in the power pose, felt more powerful and did better in mock interviews that were set up rather than the non-power poses. An example of a power pose is a person who tries to make themselves bigger such as having hands on hips while standing, and leaning back in a chair. An example of a non-power pose is when people wrap themselves up and try to make themselves smaller, and this can be seen when people wrap up, and have their hands on their necks.
When arguing in person some things to keep in mind is using facial expressions to show how you are feeling. By doing this, words are translated more clearly because people can see your emotions as well as hearing them. Another thing to keep in mind when you are arguing in person is to make gestures mainly with your hands because If someone is arguing and is just standing with their hands by their sides, then the argument will sound weak because arguments require emotions to get a point across.
Non-verbal communication methods can impact careers greatly. The Reason for this is because as explained throughout the first and second video, they are able to convey different aspects of power and understanding. Just by changing posture and being set up in a dominant power pose, people can be seen as powerful and more leadership qualities, and this is important because most people envy those qualities.
Globalization has been rapidly increasing throughout countries over the years, and it has brought a lot of change around the world. Globalization has impacted almost every aspect of modern life, John Green highlights how globalization has provided a benefit to individual economies around the world by making different markets more efficient, increasing competition, limiting military conflicts, which leads to the spread of wealth more equally around the world. But also there are some negative factors to Globalization such as climate change.
Globalization is defined as to how international strategies aim to expand businesses around the world, through different meaning of communications due to technological advancements, political developments and environmental developments. John Green says that economies have grown as a result of globalization and the reason for that is because globalization allows a company in one country to now sell its products in another country halfway around the world. Also that company can build stores and factories in another country and invest in commodities and contribute to the economy. This is important because it allows both the company and the economy of the other country to benefit from each other. Also because of globalization, it allows people to relocate to wealthier countries and start their own business or find work, and this allows people to make a higher income and may lead to more opportunities in life.
Globalization leads to more competition in businesses and markets around the world because businesses are constantly facing the challenge of being competitive in their market. Different businesses will use a variety of techniques to land a higher amount of sales and be able to get a larger portion of the market. For some, this means expanding their businesses by outsourcing manufacturing and selling products to overseas markets. Also the expansion of globalization can in fact bring more peace between countries. An increase in globalization can reduce the probability of military conflict as it leads to an increase in trade between countries. All of these points tie in together to support the fact that globalization does do good and can promote wealth.
Globalization also has negative effects on the world and one of the largest negative effects is climate change. Climate change is part of the larger problem due to the rapid expansion of globalization. Some of the aspects of climate change that John Green highlights are, ocean acidity rising, freshwater resources depleting emissions due to fossil fuels, and deforestation. These are all problems that can be solved, but will globalization increasing more rapidly, it is hard to stop these negative effects.
Due to the rapid expansion of globalization, the world will be changing in many different ways, some can be seen as increasing wealth due to economies growing by gaining more trade, the increase in competition for goods, and the limiting of violent conflicts. But on the other hand there is also the negative aspects of globalization which is predominantly categorized as climate change.
Reflection
While deciding which posts I was going to revise I first looked at each discussion and saw which post had the most to talk about, and then checked to see if I went into depth enough on the assignment. While looking at each post I saw that week ten and week thirteen were discussions that had a lot to talk about and in my first post I was not detailed and descriptive enough on the topics that were being addressed.
On my first week ten post the main priority was to grasp the understanding of what the video was talking about, and that was how non-verbal communications are used successfully in the world. Also I expanded my understanding on how we use non-verbals to argue because in my first post I only highlighted the topic of non-verbals in arguments, but in my revised assignment I went into depth as to how they can communicate more of a message. I also added more examples from both videos to try and back up the reasons on my topics.
For my second week thirteen post a lot of changes were made. The additions that were made was focusing mostly on the pros to globalization then the cons because in the two videos that I watched John Green seems to be more of a Pro bias towards globalization, so I stuck with it. But I also added one of the only negative things that John Green talked about which was about climate change. Also I rewatched the videos and added more examples from what John Green said to understand what I was talking about.
