Introduction
Models of Health, Healing and Professional Presence
My own personal beliefs differ from Era I, in that I believe there is more to nursing than just the physical aspect of a person. When working with medical surgical and surgical oncology patients, I have to look at the whole picture and that include a persons mind, body and spirit. The physical aspect of a patient when they gets out of surgery is very important but I believe that the mind and spirit are equally important and vital for the healing process they are about to endure. I am able to provide the best quality care I can when looking at all three aspects of a person.
Influence on Nursing Practice
To be a mindful nurse, I would need to be aware of my own and others feelings, thoughts, and actions. This has a huge impact on my nursing practice and can be a deciding factor on the type of nurse I am perceived as. Working in a Trauma One Hospital you come across craziness everyday but I would consider myself a mindful person and can look past the distractions to stay focused and mindful. When I was younger this was something I believe I became very good at. I was always shy and quiet so I was able to sit back and observe. Over the course of many years being mindful became a skill and now I am able to use it to better my relationships with patients as well as help provide better care for them. Every shift I work I deal with patients with different cultures and different religious beliefs. For example, a few months ago I took care a man who was middle eastern and a Muslim. He was very concerned about two things, his diet which could not include pork, and being able to have uninterrupted prayer time. Though my goal was to initially make sure the physical aspect of his body was okay, his mind and spirit were equally as important. I was able to communicate with the nutritionist to make sure we met his nutritional needs, as well as put a privacy sign on his door so that anyone who was wanting to enter his room had to stop by the front desk so that I could make sure no one would interrupt his prayer time.

Test Results Analysis
Upon completion of the Jung Personality test, my personal results were: ISFJ- Introverted Sensing Feeling and Judging. ISFJ’s include a very small percentage of people in the world and are not completely understood from the Jung study. They are characterized by their desire to help and serve others, loyalty, they are humble, have few close friends, and are family oriented. This type of personality describes me perfectly and aligns with my personal traits.
Preferences Alignment
Growing up I was always the little girl who kept my opinion to myself and was considered shy, but as I have matured and grown up I have learned how to express and communicate my opinions and needs. Sometimes I am even criticized by how direct I can be when I communicate with friends and family. I rarely jump into doing something if I am unsure if I am able to complete it; I use my past experiences and knowledge to help guide and create a path to accomplish my goals and aspirations. For the most part I am a black and white person when it comes to serious social topics, this tends to categorize me as a judgmental person. Being judgmental definitely has a negative connotation to it, I would say that I am most judgmental and harsh on myself. I believe two of my greatest attributes are being trustworthy and putting others needs before my own.
On a personal level, this test is accurate in that my family and close friends mean the world to me and I would do anything to protect them. When it comes to birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries these events hold a special value to me because I love to celebrate and make other people feel special. When I have accomplished things in the past, I have always hated being in the spotlight and being recognized. I tend to stay humble and shine that light on others around me. I disagree with one of the personalities that the Jung test described me as. People who are ISFJ tend to only see one correct way of doing things, I on the other hand believe that there are many different ways to doing something right. I have always been described as a “fixer”; when that is applied to fixing people, I have realized that not all people are alike and that it takes many different ways to meet people’s needs. When it comes to ISFJ’s careers, they lean towards healthcare, education, or religious jobs, My career aligns up perfectly with what the norm is, I am a nurse and my faith is a huge part of my life.
Potential Challenges or Barriers
There are multiple potential communication and decision-making barriers that could arise when working with people who have opposite personality types. Working in healthcare, I work alongside other nurses and doctors to help provide the best possible care for our patients. A potential barrier that could be minimized by being self-awareness is communication. I work with many individuals who are extroverted and sometimes do not understand how my mind ticks, especially with me being a woman. Being introverted I tend to over-think things, am I being too quiet, too black and white, too judgmental; with many years of trying to figure out how not to be introverted, I have finally learned that it is a gift. Instead of being quick to interrupt someone because I have something important to say, I can comfortably sit back and listen, be respectful and polite, then express what I would like to communicate. I used to show little if any verbal expressions when in a conversation, but with the awareness I have now I try to not over think things and just communicate what I am thinking. Another barrier I might face when working or caring for people is my tendency to make decisions based off of how I am feeling. I am aware that when working in the healthcare environment that this can be a weakness but I also believe that it can be a strength. Instead of completely changing this personality trait for my work environment I have learned how to use another trait, which is using factual information to make decisions. Being able to use both, I can call a physician and lay out factual information like vital signs. I am also able to communicate my patients needs based off of their emotions and my own emotions that I gain from a specific situation. In nursing these traits work hand in hand and allow me to be a good patient advocate.
Mindfulness Practice
Whole Person Goals
It is very important to me to maintain balance in my life and to provide myself with tools to be the best version of myself. I would like to maintain and even improve my physical health throughout the different stages of life. Being able to maintain a healthy weight, blood pressure and heart rate, and reduce digestive issues, are a few things I would like to work on. My two physical goals are to exercise at least two times a week and eat a balanced diet. My emotional health is just as important to me as my physical health. Two goals that I have to help control my emotions are practicing yoga and keeping a daily journal. It is necessary to have a good balance between my family and everything I do outside of family life. I am aiming to be better at balancing school, work, and family. Another Vital goal that I have is to get a good night’s rest every night. Above any other goal I have to achieve becoming more mindful, getting more involved in religious activities and strengthening my relationship with God, is my number one goal.
Achievement of Goals
I will be able to do this with practical goals that work with my everyday routine but also push me out of my comfort zone
