Football is one of the most famous sports in america, but a lot of people don’t/didn’t know how it all started (like me). I love watching the Broncos, even though they aren’t that good. I never knew how football was started, and I wanted to inform you on how it did. In this paper I will be telling you about important people, the first game, and the Super Bowl.

A very important person in the creation of football is Walter Camp. He is the one credited with a lot of rules in the NFL. Some of those are downs, planned plays, and the center snapping the ball to the quarterback. He was also a coach at Yale University from 1888-1891 (Who Invented Football?). An important coach is Glenn “Pop” Warner. He was one of the most successful college coaches of all time, winning 319 games in 44 years. He was so successful that he even has a youth football program named after him. He was the coach of many different college football teams from 1895-1891 (Buckley Jr. 16). Jim Thorpe is an important football player, even though he was more famous as an Olympic champion for a decathlon. He played eight seasons in the NFL as a running back, and a powerful tackler. He was later named as the league’s first president in 1920 (Buckley Jr. 17).

The first ever football game was between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869 (Birth of Pro Football). The two teams had 25 players in a game that wasn’t really football, but more like a mixture of rugby, soccer, and what is today football (Buckley Jr. 11). At first all of the players played the whole game on both offense and defense. There wasn’t any passing in the early games, but when it got added, football became way more popular (Buckley Jr. 11). The games were basically just a giant free-for-all. People played by different rules which caused chaos (Buckley Jr. 11).

In January, 1967, the two leagues called NFL and AFL champions faced off for the very first time. The Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt notice his daughter bouncing a rubber ball called the “Super Ball.” During a meeting a few days later, the AFL-NFL game was talked about. Hunt decided that the game should be called the “Super Bowl”, and the name has never changed since (Buckley Jr. 15). The first official Super Bowl was between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967. The game went on to have the final score of Chiefs 10, Packers 35. (First World Championship Game AFL-NFL). The Lombardi Trophy is named after the amazing Green Bay Packers’ coach, Vince Lombardi. He led his team to five titles, two of which were the two very first ones. Now whoever wins the Super Bowl gets to take home the Lombardi Trophy.

The two best teams of this season were the Patriots and the Rams. They were together in Super Bowl 53. Some say it was the most boring Super Bowl ever, and I totally agree. The final score was 13 to 3. Julian Edelman, a wide receiver for the Patriots, won MVP. In this paper I hope you learned many new things about football’s past including important people, the early games and the Super Bowl.
