Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States of America from 2009 to 2017. Barak Obama’s election was revolutionary due to him being the first African-American in office since the establishment of our country.
Almost a year into his presidency on October 9th, 2009 Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was given this prestigious award due to his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”
In March of 2010 Obama passed The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which is known to most as Obamacare. This was the first time since the 60’s in the United States that there had been a drastic change in health care policy nationwide. Obama’s aimed to make American health care more affordable, accessible, and increase the overall quality of health care.
President Obama signed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty on April 8th, 2010. This treaty was very similar to George W. Bush’s Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty, its efforts were to ultimately reduce the nuclear arsenal of both the United States and President Dimitri Medvedev’s Russia.
The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was put together on July 21st, 2010. The wall street reform essentially targeted all the establishments that were believed to have started the 2008 Recession. This also attempted to instill financial security for Americans and also protect consumers by making it easier for them understand mortgage terms before they agree to them.
On May 1st, 2011 Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind Al-Qaeda and the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 was killed. The mission to eliminate Osama bin Laden was called “Operation Neptune Spear” and it was put in action by the highly trained and acclaimed Seal Team 6, one of the most elite special forces unit on the planet.
The brutal Iraq war came to a conclusion on December 18th, 2011. President Obama was trying to put an end to the already dwindling war, so he made it clear the all troops would be back home from Iraq by December of 2011.
March 7th, 2013 marks the day that The Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 was put into action by President Obama. With this in legislation its goals were to decrease the overall violence against women. Whether it’d domestic abuse, sexual assault, sexual misconduct, or any violent crime. This helped spread awareness and immensely improved services for victims of any sexually motivated or violent crimes committed against women.
President Obama put into action an executive order on February 12th, 2014 to increase minimum wages under federal contracts. This increase was from $7.25 to a minimum $10.10.
At the Immigration Reform speech given by President Obama on November 20th, 2014 Obama said he’d use his executive power to help any illegal immigrants currently living in the United States immensely. He would help these illegal immigrants by letting them continue to live legally in the United States and also legally obtain any work. This is widely known as The Dream Act.
Under the administration of President Obama, the LGBT community was granted the long awaited same-sex marriage laws they had been wanting for years. In 5-4 Supreme Court decision on June 26th, 2015 same-sex marriage was made constitutionally legal by the United States government.
