Abnormal psychology has the foundation of mental and enchanted or spiritual of the ill-advised biological reasoning, Hippocrates. Sigmund Freud became captivated with people mainly the elderly, and the illogicality of hysteria, which was an all-inclusive explanation of psychopathology. This projected struggle connecting the conscious and unconscious minds so that sciences biological, medical and social mental illnesses would link to help people who had not been able to receive help. Psychological laboratories and clinics are people who designed the APA, books, and journals of the DSM. Sigmund Freud’s theories were a large encouragement of abnormal scientific regulations. Psychosocial model helps to explain how to make up your mind and the stage of development., Cultural background and social force encouragement to the sociocultural of abnormal behavior. Challenges Related to Classifying Normal versus Abnormal Behavior
When defining and classifying normal and abnormal behavior in psychology, culture is one of the challenges that a therapist will encounter. All disorders are classified differently by people from different cultures. Some cultures allow a wide range of behaviors than others. Additionally, some cultures behaviors are not classified as abnormal but exclusive or just unexpected. The presence of diverse cultures with different perspective on daily life makes it difficult to have fix standards which can be used to define and classify normal and abnormal behaviors.
Cultural deviance makes it difficult to identify and classify normal and abnormal because behaviors are classified not on the effects they have on the individual but on the effect the behavior has in the society A behavior that disrupts the welfare of society is as abnormal but not normal.. The disorder is in severity when the person’s behavior is obvious by the society.
Depending on the severity, there are anxiety disorders that are easier to treat, which may involve one treatment option such as relaxation technique. Those anxiety disorder may require complex treatment methods and one method is not enough. A combination of therapy, medication and complementary treatment methods take a long time to recover.
This is because some may have a combination of anxiety disorders and others may have only one. Treatment of anxiety disorders vary with patients Medication alone is rarely provided to treat but it is given as a follow up of therapy, used in cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques and medication. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are used at the same time. They are the most effective of the options since they do not only aim to treat the symptoms of the disorder but aims to treat the disorder from its roots. While behavioral therapy aims to change the abnormal actions in an anxiety disorder patient, cognitive-behavioral therapy helps the patient to identify and avoid thoughts that objects one to anxiety Medication is usually given during psychotherapy in order to keep the patient under control. Anti-depressants and anti-anxiety are the commonly used type of medication.
Relationship between Abnormal Behavior and Criminal Behavior
Normal behavior refers to expected behavior in individuals. The way people interact with others in unity with the social expectations. When these expectations and individual behavior match, the behavior is considered normal.
Normal behavior refers to expected behavior in individuals whereas abnormal behavior refers to behavioral patterns that go against the social expectations.
- A behavior becomes normal or abnormal depending on the cultural context of the individual. A behavior that is considered as abnormal in one society may not be so in another.
- The concept of abnormal behavior has different understandings over the years unlike in the case of normal behavior. In the past, abnormality was considered as effects of witchcraft and demonic possessions. Today it is considered as an illness.
- The societal treatment of normal and abnormal is also quite different. People tend to display fear and even scorn at abnormal behavior. (Aziz, Bellack & Rosenfarb, 2006).
How Correctional Institutions Have Been Affected by Abnormal Behavior
Criminologists and correctional practitioners worry that prisons encourage criminal behavior among inmates and that prisons are criminogenic. Criminologists have long debated whether prisons are criminogenic or rehabilitative centers. Although inmate culture is formed and shaped by other factors, it is primarily developed and constituted among inmates. Free citizens do not typically get arrested for not cleaning their room, but an inmate can certainly get a write up if having a messy living space. Inmates also have rules about what personal property is allowed, how much time is permitted for phone calls, and how the U.S. mail is used. Most abnormal behavior to act out if not able to use the phone, go outside, receive mail, or even have commissary. This can cause a riot or just a uprising amongst the inmates.
