Lucy is the 19-year-old daughter of a wealthy family, a young woman who is constantly being praised for her beauty, purity and angelic nature. Lucy is a very innocent and pure character. She is Minas best friend in the story. In her journal to Mina she explains that she has tree suitors that are in love with her. Arthur Holmwood, a wealthy nobleman, Quincey Morris, an American, and Dr. John Seward, a psychologist are all in love with Lucy. They are so in love with her that they all propose to her. In a letter that Lucy writes to mina Lucy says, “Why can’t they let a girl marry three men, or as many as want her, and save all this trouble?” Finally, Lucy makes up her mind and excepts the proposal of Arthur Holmwood. Later in the book we see that Lucy is starting to sleepwalk and is developing anemia.

On August 10 Mina wakes up to see that Lucy is not in bed in efforts to try to find her. Mina walks outside and sees Lucy reclining on a bench in the churchyard. Mina sees a dark figure bending over Lucy, and as she approaches the figure looks up towards her. At that moment mina saw a pale faced figure with gleamy red eyes. She goes toward Lucy and sees that Lucy is asleep. When Lucy wakes, Mina finds “two little red points like pin-pricks” on her friend’s neck and decides that she must have accidentally pricked Lucy while helping her pin her shawl. In the days after, Lucy more and more pale and very fatigued. The little red points on her neck also grew larger.

When Van Helsing arrives to find Lucy terribly pale and unable to breathe easily, he then realizes that poor Lucy has become a victim of count Dracula and suggest a blood transfusion. He then suggests that all of Lucy’s suitors participate in a blood transfusion to help save her life. The morning after the blood transfusion Van Helsing and dr. Seward go to the Westenra residence where they are greeted by Lucy’s mother. She then told the men that last night she had removed all the “horrible, strong-smelling flowers” from Lucy’s room she had also left her window open so fresh air can get into the room. Once the men heard this, they rushed to Lucy’s room to find her near death.

On September 17, Lucy was awakened by a flapping at the window and a howling from a wolf outside. Mrs. Westenra was also scared by the noise and came in to join her daughter in bed.

Mina Murray is an orphan that is engaged to Johnathan Harker, she works as a school mistress. Mina is a very amazing and hardworking wife. Many times, in the novel Mina is seen doing many things to benefit the group and her husband Johnathan. For example, Mina insist in learning typewriting skills in order to be useful to her husband. She also learns the train timetable by heart just in case her husband is in a hurry. the auther, Bram Stoker did a good job at portraying Mina as an Ideal Victorian woman.

After she finds out that Johnathan escaped the clutches of Dracula she travels to Budapest and returns home to England as a married woman where she is helping him recover from his traumatic experience. She teams up with a couple individuals to try to defeat Count Dracula. Unfortunately, Mina was bit by Dracula and forced to drink his blood, this resulted in Mina being able to see into the mind of Dracula. This ability benefited the group and allowed them to track down Dracula, but this ability was also making Mina more and more into a monster. As the novel continues so does the search of count Dracula. In the novel Mina and other individuals are determined to kill count Dracula to free Mina from his vampiric spell. Toward the ending of the book Mina shows her bravery and intelligence by becoming one of the key reasons Dracula dies.

“Seven years ago, we all went through the flames. And the happiness of some of us since then is, we think, well worth the pain we endured. It is an added joy to Mina and to me that our boy’s birthday is the same day as that on which Quincey Morris died. His mother holds, I know, the secret belief that some of our brave friend’s spirit has passed into him. His bundle of names links all our little band of men together. But we call him Quincey” (Chapter 27). At the end of the novel there is a not, the note has information on how they are living seven years after the traumatic event. Jonothan and Mina have their first-born son on the same day that their friend Quincey Moor was killed by Draculas’ minions. So Jonothan and Mina named their son Quincey in honor of their lost friend. In the book Minas son Quincey signifies hope, and s new beginning.

I believe that Mina does live happily ever after because she does end up with everything she wanted. She ends up married to the man she has always wanted, Johnathan, she also has a child with him. However, I also think that Mina is scared from her traumatic experience. I believe this because she was close to death and had a near death experience.
