Detective fiction creates a crime scene that leads to investigation. This intrigues the reader to then figure out the mystery or solve the case along with the detectives created in the story. Poe created Dupin which led to the birth of detective fiction. Detective fiction created some of our best story lines such as Sherlock Holmes, and many more within the detective writing culture.

Detective fiction creates an eerie type of feeling , but it all started out with the words of Poe. Poe wrote many of the greatest poems in the writing community, but his story lines always portrayed a psycho or mentally unstable character that committed a crime which then led to the creation of the detective and the solving of a mystery, or investigation. Edgar Allen Poe’s writing style created the character Auguste Dupin that led to the birth of Sherlock Holmes, and many more within the investigating community.

On January 19, 1809 Edgar Allan Poe was born into a dirt poor family. The parents occupations as traveling actors did not pay well. In 1811 his father had left and not to long after his mother died of tuberculosis. Edgar and his siblings were then separated into foster homes. Edgar attended school in London until he was 15 and he ended up back in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Edgar then wrote his first poem at the age of 15.’Last night, with many cares & toils oppressed,/ Weary, I laid me on a couch to rest (shmoop).” Poe then went to college at the university of Virginia in 1826, but due to a gambling problem and debt he went to live with family in Baltimore. Poe then went into the army but figured it wasn’t for him, so he found a way to get kicked out. This then blossomed into his writing career.

Poe published anonymous short stories and published another book of poems. He then got a job as an editor and expressed his love for his 13 year old cousin. “In December 1835, Poe was hired as the editor of the Southern Literary Messenger staving off starvation. Then, in one of the strangest twists in his life , he fell in love with his thirteen-year-old first cousin, Virginia Clemm.

‘I love, you know I love Virginia passionately devotedly. I cannot express in words the fervent devotion I feel towards my dear little cousin — my own darling,’ wrote the 26-year-old Poe in a letter to his aunt, begging for permission to marry her. ‘Ask Virginia. Leave it to her. Let me have, under her own hand, a letter, bidding me good bye — forever — and I may die — my heart will break — but I will say no more (shmoop).” Although this unusual event occurred he still continued to publish and to create his own style or trademark. This led to the creation of detective fiction.

The birth of Auguste Dupin started the detective culture. As this detective was featured in 3 of Poe’s stories. “Dupin made his first appearance in Poe’s “the murders in rue morgue” (1841), widely considered the first detective fiction story. He reappears in ‘The Mystery of Marie Rogêt’ (1842) and ‘The Purloined Letter’ (1844)(Wikipedia).”

“The murders of rue morgue”, Dupin is the detective over a horrific murder of two women. This is one of the most known Poe stories that features Dupin. The birth of Dupin however birthed the detective fiction writing culture. For example, “ A study in scarlet,” was a book written in 1887 by a British author by the name of Arthur Conan Doyle. This story has the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes and Dr.watson , which is considered one of the most famous detective duo in the detective fiction industry. Also, the Philo Vance series by, S.S Van Dine. Philo Vance is a ficitional character who was featured in 12 novels by Dine which created, “The Philo Vance murder case collection.”

Although, Poe created many stories that has to be solved. “The Tell-Tale heart,” portrays a man who murdered another man and describes his unstable struggle of staying sane. “The Raven,” has a mysterious raven that a shattered lover talks to while he falls into his distressed madness. Detective fiction also creates more than a crime scene. It also portrays symbolism, suspense and horror, and lastly gothic writing style. His tone creates the story by his writing style and sense of imagery. This influenced the detective writing culture. However, Poe has a recurring writing style: death, lost love, or even both.

“The raven”, was inspired by the writer Charles Dickens. Charles had a beloved raven and was fascinated by the creature and its behaviors and wanted to study it. This was one of Poe’s most loved pieces of work.

Thus, Poe birthed the detective writing industry. Although, Sherlock Holmes and Auguste Dupin has compatibility, however, there are many more characters that have been added to the detective writing culture today. Nevertheless Poe is the creator or father of the detective writing industry.
