The Cask of Amontillado is published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This version of The Cask of Amontillado was published in 2015 and has horror as a genre.
The Cask of Amontillado tells about the creepy story of Montresor and the Cask of Amontillado. Before I read the story, I think that it’ll be about two friends who will discover the secret of the Cask of Amontillado.

We’re going to start off with the summary of the story. The story is about two men who aren’t that kind of good friends, namely Montresor and Fortunato. The story starts off on a day in the carnival season. Montresor and Fortunato will meet each other there. But what Fortunato doesn’t know is that Montresor will take revenge for all the times Fortunato avenged him. When they’re talking to each other, Montresor discovers Fortunato’s weak spot, namely the fact that Fortunato is a big wine lover.

When Montresor knows this, he tries to lead Fortunato to a big crypt that Montresor made to lure him in, so Fortunato could spend the rest of his life and where his ghost will rest. It wasn’t an easy job to get Fortunato to this crypt, Montresor had to tell that he bought a bottle of Amontillado to go to his friend Luchesi, a man who knows a lot about wines and he could determine whether it was a real one or a fake one.

Because you can barely see any differences between an Amontillado and a Sherry, Luchesi asked Montresor and Fortunato to come with him to his vault. Poor Fortunato didn’t know anything about the things that Montresor would do with him. Because Fortunato was a little bit sick, Montresor begged him to not go any further.

On that moment Fortunato said that he won’t die from a cough. They proceeded further into the tunnel and entering the vault room. At a certain moment, Fortunato saw a real good French wine, a Medoc. He took a drink and drank for the dead people buried around them. Montresor answered sarcastically: “And I about your long life”.

Montresor kept complaining about Fortunato’s health and insisted to go back because of his illness. Fortunato got enough of Montresor’s complaining and they kept on drinking Medoc. Fortunato insulted Montresor by saying that Montresor isn’t someone from the brotherhood. Because of the insult, Montresor showed a trowel where he made Fortunato’s tomb with. Despite the fact that Montresor revealed a little piece of his intentions with Fortunato, they proceeded to drink the Amontillado.

The trowel would also be used to plaster the stones to close the tomb. Montresor chained Fortunato to a wall and warned him for the nitre on the wall. He said this so he wouldn’t put his hands on the wall. After getting chained, Fortunato begged to Montresor to return back to where they came from. But Montresor didn’t want it of course. His plan was working, so why would he unchain him?
Montresor finishes it off quite good, but expectable. But what that’ll be, I’m not going to say, because I don’t want to spoil the end.

Now we’re up to my opinion on the story.
I’m actually not a fan of reading, but this story was really thrilling and got me throughout the whole text. I like the way Poe writes. In my opinion, he’s a better writer than Dahl. Although most of Dahl’s books are more for kids, this one was more for young adults like me. Despite the harder and a bit older English, the fragment was actually really good readable.

Last year, in my previous school we already got to know Poe. We had to read his poem “The Raven”. After reading that I was considering reading some more of Poe’s works, but I didn’t really get to it. But now reading this story, really wants me to read more from him definitely.

I think Poe really showed us that friendship isn’t always is puppies and sunshine. This “friendship” actually more is enmity. Poe also fooled me. I thought it was some kind of Halloween story about two persons who’ll discover the secret of a Cask of Amontillado. Turns out it isn’t actually a secret, but actually a bottle of good wine which is rather expensive. But the story is kind of Halloween and horror-related with the bloody end.

After reading this whole story, I would definitely recommend to all my friends and family. Also to those who don’t like to read at all, just like me. It really was a nice story.

We can conclude that this story is really good, despite the bloody end and the English which is a bit older but still understandable.
