My name is Emmett Polsky. The school I am attending has been Inter-American Magnet School since Pre-K. This school is Spanish-immersion, so I’ve had the opportunity to learn Spanish in my years and as a result, I am now fluent in English and Spanish. Something that has shaped my life experience is my love for sports. My love for sports has taught me many life lessons. I play football, basketball, and baseball. These sports have taught me to be hard-working, to have good sportsmanship, to never give up, teamwork, to be a leader, and much more.
One sport that has shaped my life is football. I’ve been playing football for about 4-5 years now. This sport has taught me to be hard working. For example, I am a receiver so I am going up against much bigger defenders, so I must work hard to get past them. I also play defensive back, so I have to work hard to cover them, so they can’t get the ball. A final example is, when I am just playing catch or I am training, I work hard so I can be the best I can be.
This is why football has taught me the life lesson to always be a hard worker, and why sports have shaped my life experience. Another sport that has shaped my life experience is basketball. Basketball is my favorite sport. I’ve played basketball for 8 years now. I still have fond memories of people holding me near the hoop, so I can drop the ball in. Basketball has shown me to never give up. For example, when I am shooting the ball by myself in the park, sometimes I will miss many times in a row, and it frustrates me, but I can’t give up.
I keep persisting until my shooting gets better. Another example is, during a game I might be shooting badly, or making bad passes, or letting who I’m defending past me, but I keep playing and don’t give up just because things aren’t going my way. A final example is, that if my team is losing or has lost, I can’t just quit and stop playing. I play the next game with more effort or continue playing the current game because I can never quit. This is why my love for basketball and the rest of sports has shaped how I experience life.
The final sport that has shaped my life experience is baseball. Baseball has taught me to be a leader. I’ve been playing baseball for about 7 years. This past summer, I played baseball, and I was the oldest on my team. Some of the younger kids hadn’t had as much experience, or were afraid of some faster pitching. I had to mentor the younger kids to be more confident in themselves, to try their best, and when they missed a ball or strike out, I reassured them that it was okay and that they’ll get it next time.
One specific time, I remember that we were playing against a team with a big guy that could hit and pitch well. He started to pitch and almost everybody was scared to face him. He did throw pretty fast. I ended up getting a hit against him. That proved to the younger kids that getting a hit against him was possible. Once the inning was over, I went to the bench and told the kids that if you try your best and believe in yourself, you can do well. This is why learning to be a leader from baseball has shaped my experience of life.
All of these sports have taught me to have good sportsmanship and to have good teamwork. The famous saying goes, “there’s no I in TEAM.” This is true because I think TEAM stands for “Together Everyone Achieves More.” I love this motto because it is true because, in all “team” sports, you have to be able to work well together. This shows especially well in basketball. You have to be able to share the ball, and everyone is involved in every play.
Good sportsmanship is also critical in sports. You have to be able to lose and win gracefully as to not get down and to not make opponents get down. This is why teamwork and good sportsmanship play a big part in sports. In conclusion, these life skills will help me throughout my high school career and throughout the rest of my life by making me a hard worker, to never give up, to show good sportsmanship (and kindness) to others, to be a leader, and much more. These are how sports have shaped my life experience the most.
