Different religions are created when man decides that a belief that a church may say isn’t what thy think is right. Throughout history we have many leaders who began a reformation and created a religion they believe is truest. Martin Luther created Lutheranism, John Calvin created Calvinism, the radicals created Anabaptism, Spiritualism and Unitarianism. But they’re similar in a way because their beliefs all come from Christianity. So you can imagine that these religions would have things in common.
The Roman Catholic church is essentially what gets broken off into these reforms. The Catholic Church has a series of seven sacraments in which they follow: baptism, confirmation, eucharist, marriage, holy orders, forgiveness and attending to the sick. Roman Catholics follow the belief that an infant is baptized in order to receive God’s grace which is faith. As these churches began to break off into new religions, all different interpretations of these sacraments began to reveal. For example, Anabaptists believe the opposite of what Roman Catholics think which is baptizing adults not infants. The Bible says Jesus was an adult when he was baptized so they believe all should be baptized as adults as well. The Roman Catholic church and Lutherans baptize infants when they are first born to receive the gift of having faith for the rest of their lives, although lutherans call the process of receiving God’s gift as “justification by faith.
” Babies who have not gotten baptized was said to be called in a “limbo” by the Catholics and it was considered a big disgrace (pun intended). “Currently, unbaptized babies are said to be sent to limbo where they cannot receive God’s grace, a punishment that is now considered too harsh by the church.” Another sacrament Lutherans follow is the Eucharist, or the ceremony during sacrament where wine and bread are eaten to symbolize Christ’s body and his blood that he sacrificed for us. But Martin Luther believed that the priests shouldn’t be the only ones allowed to drink the wine. In fact, Lutherans let the laity participate in the Eucharist as well. Lutherans didn’t always agree with some of the sacraments Roman Catholicism follows. Lutherans believe that if the practice is not indicated in the Bible, its probably not Christian so he discarded some of the sacraments that aren’t spoken about in the Bible.
Nobody in this world is perfect so when Roman Catholics sin, their theology of penance allows them to live at peace with the idea that they can confess their sins and receive a punishment of a number of prayers. Penance is considered a punishment here for the living but there will still be a punishment with God at Purgatory and at the Last Judgement. It was also clear that the idea of penance would reduce the punishment in the next life and that penance was eternal salvation. It was then announced that a sinner could actually take time out of purgatory by doing good in the world while on the earth. Lutherans had contrasted that eternal salvation came from faith not penance. Martin Luther preached that humans aren’t capable of doing good. Those who do good have God’s help and those blessed can naturally do good works.
